Catch Up Fridays , Fun Activities for Grade V Drop Everything and Read
(DEAR )

In line with the Department of Educations initiative to boost learning and address any
learning gaps, Catch -Up Fridays offer a dedicated focus on reading with Drop Everything and
Read” (DEAR) sessions. Let’s explore some engaging activities to make these Friday’s a hit for
Grade V pupils.

Pre – Reading Activities:


1. Warm – up the brain: Starts energizing activities clapping games, riddles, and singing
related to the story they have read.
2. Set the scene : Play thematically relevant music or creating short story about their
experiences.
3. Vocabulary Words : Introduce the key words from the book beforehand through
games, or puzzles .
4. Predictive Activities : Show the book cover and title , brainstorm the story might be
about , predict the characters and plot points based on clues.

DEAR Time:
 Choice is key: Offer a variety of reading materials suitable for different interest and
reading level. This could friction, non- friction , graphic novels, poems.
 Partnerships: Pair struggling readers with stronger reader for buddy reading sessions
Supports and confidence.
 Technology integration: Use audio recording of the book or online story telling flatforms
to cater to different learning styles.

Pre- Reading Activities:


 Sharing circles: Gather students to discuss their favorite parts of the book, character
they identified with, or questions they have.
 Creative expressions : Encourage students to express their understanding through
drawings, shorts stories or dramatization.
 Cross- curricular connections: Link the book with other subjects like Math (solving
problem in the story). Science (exploring scientific concepts mentioned), or Arts
( creating visuals based on the characters).
 Games and quizzes: Play word games related to the story , have vocabulary quizzes,
Or organized books to scavengers hunts to reinforce comprehension.

plot, character, ending of the story . Encourage to give the moral
lesson in the story .

Every minute rotate each group to ensure all students


experience different activities .

Values Education and Peace Education : ( 10:00- 11:30)


Circle Time : Gather students in a circle and engage in discussions about important value
like honesty, respect, empathy, and responsibility . Use stories, role- playing or dilemma
scenarios to speak meaningful conversations

Afternoon
1:00- 2:00 Create Peace Projects
Divide the pupils into 3 groups and assign a specific
value related to peace, such as cooperation .
Create a poster , skits or songs to share their value

2:00- 3:00 Creative Expressions

Read A Thon- Participation


Choose a passage from their favorite story book to read aloud
adding dramatic touches

Write and Illustrates Stories

Illustrates short stories based in values studied and themes


explore during Catch- Up Friday’s. Share your creation in the class.

Fun and engaging activity like exercises, dancing , singing and
posters about health
