Introduction
In this assessment students will be asked to participate in an immersive in-class group activity
called the Pizza of Managerial Characteristics. Students will identify the skills, attributes and
attitudes they find essential for successful managers, and then assess their own skills and level of
maturity in demonstrating these traits.
Assignment
The assignment will be done in class in groups of 4 or 5 students. First, students will identify skills,
attributes and attitudes that they find important for successful managers. Students can refer to
the course materials or make internet research. These skills are presented as a pizza to the rest of
the class. Next, students will assess themselves on these dimensions, and initiate goal setting to
reach mastery of these skills.
Step 1. Define Managerial Skills and Traits (20 minutes)
As a group, prepare your own set of important managerial skills and attributes, and draw a pizza
shape and label the slices with the items they listed. Example dimensions for the Pizza could be
the following:
Integrity Self-efficiency
Lead by example
Emotional intelligence
Listening skills
Ethics
Motivation skills
Delegation
Flexibility
Goal setting
Honesty
Trust
Innovation
Time Management
Problem solving
Creativity
Decision making
Situational awareness
Empathy
Self-awareness
Figure 1. An Example of the Pizza of Managerial Traits
Share your drawings as a group and explain which labels have they chosen. Explain why you
choose certain decisions and identify common patterns in the group's perception of a good
manager.
Each participant should assess themselves on a scale of 1 to 10 for each slice. (10 is the edge if
the slice, 1 is the core of the pizza). Present the work as a visual spider diagram.
This self-assessment serves as a baseline for setting up own personal goals for developing as
a manager. The areas where they find them weaker should receive more focus in their future
development.
Step 4. Compare scores in a group and prepare a reflection (10 minutes + 5 minutes
presentation per group)
Compare each participant’s scores and identify areas where most students have strengths and
weaknesses. Prepare to share this reflection with the class.
Step 5. Debrief
Students will be assessed based on the oral presentation and the supporting notes (the pizza
template). Groups are expected to submit the Pizza template (5% of the grade), and the
presentations will be recorded (20% of the grade).
Students will present the Managerial Traits Pizza as a group (Step 2).
