0.- BACKGROUND
The objetive of this technical specification is to describe the characteristics required by Fersa for
external shipments of spheroidal Graphite or Malleable cast iron for wheel hubs with flange.
2.- SCOPE
Applies to all Hubs, manufactured with spheroidal graphite or malleable cast iron, used in the
assembling of pre-set hub assemblies.
Mechanical properties and microstructure defined according cast iron grade must be analyzed from
mechanized samples prepared preferably from attached samples to the mold, as it is shown in
Figure 2.
Preferential sample to be used: Sample attached to the piece. Heat sample manufactured in the
mold next to the piece, with a common filling system.
Spcecimens taken by the same piece won’t be considered for approval process
In case of the supplier use Independent samples, Fersa must be informed and agreed with this
condition previously use it.
Additionaly, independent samples must be representative of the mass production by casting into an
independent sand mold, under the same cooling and casting parameters than manufactured pieces.
In case of doubt about the origin of said samples, Fersa may reject the samples and affected batch.
Cast samples must be cylindrical and must be representative of the relevant wall thickness.
Depending on it, the recommended diameter of the tensile strength specimen is according the
following table:
Note: Cylindrical specimens must be enought to make a subsequent mechanization for tensile
strength specimen. These specimens will be used after mechanization for both mechanical and
metallographic analyses. If the relevant wall thickness is less than the optimum diameter of the
tensile strength specimen according to EN-ISO 1563 standard, the diameter of the cylindrical
sample can be increased (D=25 mm according appendix A), or reduce the dimensions of the tensile
strength specimen according ISO 1563 (see Figure 5, section 5.5 on this document). In that case, an
agreement between Fersa & Supplier will be required.
5.1.- Designation
The material is designed in the drawing with symbolic or numerical designation according to UNE-
EN 1563 standard. Appendix B shows the characteristics to keep for casting made by the indicated
cast iron.
The manufacturing method of spheroidal graphite cast iron, its chemical composition and the
different types of heat treatments are left to the manufacturer's decision unless a specific
agreement is established.
The specific variations that may be required in the manufacturing method, chemical composition or
heat treatment will be agreed with the manufacturer and established particularly for that order.
5.3.- Microestructure
Before tensile strength test: In the head (extreme) of the cylindrical sample.
After the tensile strength test: non plastic deformation area.
The supplier and Fersa must analyze the microestructure in the same area in order to make a
representative and equivalent analyses.
In the microstructure report, supplier must indicate the selected analysis area (number of samples
taken and number of selected areas), as well as the magnification , material designation, part
number, heat number, report date and operator and/or the laboratory who signs the report. Any
other requirement must be agreed by Fersa and the supplier.
5.4.- Hardness
The hardness will always be measured on the cylindrical sample, which is representative of the
casting, and in the same area agreed between supplier and Fersa. Brinell scale is the hardness
unit of measure recommended other scale must be agreed by Fersa and the supplier.
In case of hardness measurements over wheel hub, the analysis area must be agreed between
the supplier and Fersa in order to obtain comparative results.
Tensile stregth test must be carried out according to EN ISO 6892-1:2009 standard. The
recommended diameter is 14 mm, for a cilindrical cast sample of 25 mm of diameter. In all cases,
the initial length of the sample must be according to:
d L0 Lc min
5 25 30
7 35 42
10 50 60
14 70 84
20 100 120
Materials involved in manufacturing, and specified in the drawing, must be according to the
parameters shown in Appendix B table. The parameters to be controlled depending on the relevant
wall thickness must be the following:
Supplier must provide to Fersa a metallurgical report in which the mechanical properties results will
be reported for every batch prior to the batch.
This specification refers to the types of discontinuities, and the degree thereof, permitted in
sections of hubs made for Fersa Bearings.
The following quality levels, evaluated according to the Radiographic Standard ASTM E 446, must
be ensured unless there are more restrictive prescriptions reported on the drawing.
A Gas holes 2
CA Dendritic shrinkage 3
CB Shrinkage holes 3
CC Shrinkage sponginess 3
CD Filiform shrinkage 2
D Cracks No allowed
Table 3: Acceptance limits for radiographic inspections (ASTM E 446)
When two or more types of defect close to the forecasted maximum limit are simultaneously
present, the casting shall be rejected.
ASTM E446 and the radiographs referenced in that specification shall be used for cross-sections up
to 2 inches/51 mm thick.
Visual acceptance of the casting outer surface is according to the levels specified in MSS SP-55. If
there is any exception, will be shown on the drawing.
If drawing or order do not report specific requirements, colors for primer painting shall be black
(RAL 9005). Painting standard cycle:
Sandblasting: All castings shall be accurately deburred and sandblasted.
Washing
Wipe Drying
Painting: Shall be provided by dipping, spray painting is allowed on parts which are not
totally free of overlaps only.
Flash-off: Flas-off time between the outcome of casting from the painting tank and the
income into the oven shall be at least the one forecasted on the technical report of the
used product.
Drying: Shall be in oven, with temperature and duration forecasted by the technical report
of the used painting product, and based o both mass and thickness of casting.
Final Inspection: A final inspection shall be forecasted to ensure:
o Absence of paint clots
o Absence of areas not painted
o Absence of sandblasting residuals attached to the paint
o Good coverage of all the casting surface
Test for compliance verification of the above mentioned characteristics shall be provided on
specific specimen, for each type of used paint, for every supply of a new product, for every supply
of product from a new supplier and for every variation of process parameters. The results of such
tests shall be available, If eventually requiered by Fersa Bearings.
There are two dimension categories according to control, main hub dimensions (see table 5) and
depending on the bearing type (see table 6). Significant characteristics (SC) of both categories
must be controllled. These characteristics are product characteristics that may affect:
* form, fit or function of the product
* the production (assembly) process
* safety or stability of the finished product
Figures below show 2 examples of hubs where the dimension listed above can be found:
During the homologation procedure for a new supplier and/or new part number previously to the
first delivery and acceptance of the design, supplier has to provide to Fersa the below samples and
information:
These samples must be representatives of the producction. Fersa reserves the right to non inspect
the incoming material but to reject them in case of non conformities or documentation not
complete or missing.
In any case, the quality approval for the prototype is not valid for the mass production. If the
supplier modifies the production or the mold, new samples will be needed for a new homologation.
Hubs manufactured shall be inspected by the casting supplier for all the dimensional and
metallurgical characteristics which are reported on the drawing.
In case of any deviation, the supplier have to alert SQD Fersa Department. Fersa has to send the
corresponding approval report for any deviation.
Figure 8. Marking
Unless otherwise specified on drawing and on purchase order, all the castings shall report:
Marking shall be provided on locations not worked by machining, shall not be provided on locations
correspondent to machining startup points and shall be easy to read.
Casting hub deliveries must be done in Std. European Pallet (EPAL type UNE EN-13698). Dimensions
are specified in Figure 9:
Pallet delivery must be done in 3 layers reaching a maxium height 1200mm. Hubs must be placed
with the rim position upwards. All parts wheel flange must be in contact. Each layer must include 6
hubs. The position of the parts must be as much as centered possible in each layer (see Figure 10).
Wooden or
conglomerate
boards
The casting hubs shall be placed in the packaging with the outboard side always facing
upwards.
Wooden or conglomerate boards with a thickness of 15 mm/(0.6 inches) will be placed to
separate different vertical levels of hubs and on the top of each pallet. Maximum weight of the
pallet: 1000 Kg.
Components must be safe and well distributed.
It is not allowed to stack pallets. Incomplete levels in pallets are not allowed. Pallets must be
fumigated before shipping
The parts must be protected with oil, to ensure that parts are received in good condition, not
allowing rust. To protect the delivery each pallet must be delivered with a VCI (Volatile corrosion
inhibitor) bag covering all the hubs.
Complete pallet must be wrapped, protecting the whole pallet. The plastic must cover the
protecting VCI Bag and compacting the parts delivery to avoid movement during transport.
The provider must attach technical specifications and material safety data sheet protector used oil.
It does not allow the presence in the castings:

if there is a written approval by FERSA BEARINGS.
The products with deviations (in case they are accepted and supplied) must be identified with the
part number of the deviation (Inspection certificate).
The European End-of-Life-Vehicles (ELV) Directive 2000/53EC that was entered into force on
October 21, 2000, imposes specific rules for materials used in cars. All suppliers of FERSA BEARINGS
are responsible to ensure that the ELV-Directive is fulfilled, and need to inform FERSA BEARINGS
about the contents of every part you deliver to FERSA BEARINGS.
Liability rests with the supplier in the event of that components being supplied to FERSA BEARINGS
do not conform to the relevant statutory requirements. Any and all costs incurred in such instances
will have to be borne to their full extent by the supplier, not by FERSA BEARINGS.
The undersigning company hereby makes the legally binding statement that the provisions of the
below mentioned regulation for substances, compounds and products have been fulfilled and that
the materials supplied to FERSA BEARINGS have been used and applied as intented.
Regulation (EC) No. 1907/2006 of the European Parliament and the Council of December 18, 2006
for the Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH) and all legal
references listed therein.
Important: The aforementioned regulation shall always be applied in its last amended version. Its
valid version may be retrieved via internet from the European Union an Brussels under
http://www.europa.eu.int (further search in accordance with directory).
Furthermore it is confirmed that all substances, compounds and products which are used, applied
as intended, and produced by the undersigning company in the European Union or imported to the
European Union, for the production or processing of the materials to be supplied to FERSA
BEARINGS shall be pre-registered. The same applies to those substances which are used for
production processes by FERSA BEARINGS as so-called downstream user.
It is confirmed that an appropriate pre-registration obligation shall be obtained from the suppliers
of the undersigning company in connection with all substances, compounds and products which are
used and applied as intended for the production or processing of the materials supplied to FERSA
BEARINGS.
FERSA BEARINGS shall be promptly informed about cases which may lead to a discontinuance of
the supply of material as a result of the failure to act of one of the parties within the supply chain.
The undersigning company is aware that the pre-registration is not an obligation to register these
substances. During the transition period and prior to the registration obligation, the undersigning
company shall remain in contact with its supply chain and shall provide an early warning in case the
supply to FERSA BEARINGS may be discontinued as a result of actions by the regulatory agency or
because of economical aspects.
The dimensions of cilindrical samples must be agreed between supplier and Fersa.

Section 5.5.
By agreement between the manufacturer and purchaser, a narrower hardness range may be adopted
in the agreed position, provided that this is not less than 40 Brinell hardness units.
NOTE 2 Eutectic carbides increase the hardness, but are generally undesirable, and their occurrence is
only likely in small quantities.
* An agreement between the manufacturer and the purchaser may establish a narrower range
of use; a tolerance range between 30 and 40 Brinell hardness units is generally acceptable.
This hardness range can be wider for grades with a ferritic/pearlitic base structure.
