INTRODUCTION

To achieve personal financial independence in a time of unpredictable financial

economies, one must ensure and put into practice smart financial management
techniques, among which saving is essentially important. Whether it's planning for the
future, weathering unexpected emergencies, or achieving long-held aspirations, the
act of saving forms the cornerstone of financial well-being. It empowers individuals
and families to navigate life's various phases with confidence, offering a buffer
against unforeseen challenges and providing a foundation for future prosperity.

The project's goal is to develop an innovative educational tool that promotes

responsible financial awareness and money-saving habits of an individual. Moreover,
there is a worry that people can lose touch with physical currency as electronic
transactions grow. It is crucial to provide individuals, particularly children, with an
engaging and effective way to teach them about the value of money in the digital age
and how to handle it. The goal is to provide users with a fun and engaging platform
that teaches people about the ideas of setting financial goals, managing budgets, and
comprehending the value of money in today's highly digitalized world, in addition to
managing and representing savings.

Since ancient times, the idea of a piggy bank has been a beloved custom that teaches
kids the fundamental need of saving money. Our project is somewhat identical to that
one, but it will make use of technology. Saving is a necessity in every aspect of life,
and being able to develop the habit would help one succeed financially in life. This
project will serve as a testament to how innovative thinking can enhance and
modernize traditional practices for the benefit of future generations.

Background of the problem

Traditional coin banks, mostly made out of a simple container or a piggy bank is
designed for the storage of a loose change which at the same time builds a financial
discipline and cultivates the habit of a thrift of a person. However, although
traditional method coin banks can encourage and motivate individuals to save coins, it
lacks of efficiency when it comes to saving and sorting the coins. Traditional banks

FT-ARA-020-00 | STI College Las Piñas 5

do not offer any mechanism that separates different value of the coin to each other
which results on having a difficult track of the savings of an individual. Also, it
provides a time-consuming task to a person once the coins have been manually
counted and sorted. Inaccurate accounting is one factor that can arise once an
individual manually counts the coins which can lead to a frustration of a person due to
not determining the precise saving progress which leads to counting again at the start.
Due to these difficulties, BB1 is a modern coin bank that incorporates an automated
saving and sorting of coins that provides a solution to the challenges that is given in a
traditional coin bank. This would provide greater organization of coins, ease, and an
improved user experience.

BB1 simplifies the sorting and counting process of a coin. Users of it can easily track
their own savings which promotes a more convenient approach in saving. Improved
Accuracy is provided in an automated coin bank due to its automatic shows the total
amount of coins saved in the bank which is displayed in an LCD and in a desktop
application. A handmade coin slider is designed to sort the different types of coins. Its
desktop application allows users to set saving goals and monitor their own progress
which leads to an encouragement of saving a money. BB1 provides an implication for
financial education, effectiveness, goal-setting, and environmental sustainability. It
encourages better financial practices and make it easier for individuals to manage
their actual savings.

Overview of the current state of the technology

Traditional coin bank which is a straightforward financial tool, continues to hold its
place in the modern world. Though its concept remains unchanged, comparing it to
automated coin banks, different problems remain to it such as manual labor of
counting the coin which is time-consuming, and for it being error-prone. Also,
traditional coin banks provide no record of the savings of an individual which is
challenging for the tracking of the number of coins.

Combination of creativity and accessibility is now possible with automated coin

banks due to significant advances in technology. With the addition of advanced coin
acceptors that reliably identify coin denominations, deposits are recorded precisely

FT-ARA-020-00 | STI College Las Piñas 6

according to improved coin recognition and acceptance. Touchscreen displays and
secure authentication techniques have made user interaction more user-friendly,
improving the entire user experience.

Comprehensive user registration, real-time account updates, and a thorough

transaction history are all included in account management, which is frequently
connected with desktop application for straightforward tracking and administration.
Additionally, remote access is made possible through wireless connection modules,
allowing customers to examine their savings and transaction history from almost its
desktop application.

Objectives of the study

The initial model is designed to assist individuals in conserving, organizing, and

monitoring their peso coin collections at the BB1, all facilitated by a LCD display.
Additionally, a desktop software program is integrated to offer a clear depiction of
savings progress, the flexibility to define financial objectives, and an overview of the
accumulated total. The objectives encompass the development of coin detection, the
implementation of a coin counting algorithm, and the presentation of the accumulated
sum both on the LCD display and within the application. The desktop application
boasts a user-friendly interface that allows users to conveniently inspect their savings,
reset count records, and set their financial aspirations. Moreover, it incorporates
motivational messages to inspire a culture of thriftiness. Specifically, we aim to:

1. To design and develop a mechanism that sorts different types of coins once inserted
in the BB1.

2. To be able to display both in the LCD and desktop application the total amount
saved in the bank.

3. To conduct and provide a user-friendly interface on the desktop application that

allows users to view the savings, reset the count, and set savings goals.

Scope and limitations of the study

Scope

FT-ARA-020-00 | STI College Las Piñas 7

The primary target audience for the Barya Bangko initiative comprises individuals
with a preference for saving rather than immediate expenditure. The initiative
encompasses the utilization of Arduino technology and a desktop application to
establish a system capable of visually identifying the total amount of coins that has
been dropped and accept by the coin acceptor during their deposit into the BB1.
Furthermore, it encompasses the development of a user-friendly desktop application
aimed at aiding users in tracking their savings, defining objectives, and receiving real-
time updates. The versatile Arduino Coin Sorting and Counting Machine serves
various sectors and fields effectively. Its central function revolves around the counting
and sorting of coins, rendering it a valuable tool for financial management,
simplifying the task of saving and managing one’s loose change.

Limitation

 Major Limitation is the preciseness and efficiency of the coin slider.

 Additional Major Limitation is 5 and 10-peso coins are almost the same size
and because of that both of them are possibly assigned to drop at the same tray
which will lead to a possibility of the tray being full immediately as it is also
small for both types of coins.

 Last Major Limitation is Only 1 user is required per BB1

 It might not match the effectiveness of commercial coin counting devices,

making it less suitable for high-capacity sorting responsibilities.

 Most of the modules are located in the main page or in the same form.

 The BB1 system encounters considerable issues arising from its security
measures. The general security framework lacks robustness, which gives rise
to concerns regarding the safety of user data.

 The precision of coin identification within the system might be compromised,

primarily because of the variable conditions of the coins being processed.

 Another drawback of the system is the loud operation of its mechanical coin
sorters, which might be disruptive in quiet settings.

LITERATURE REVIEW

Review of related literature, studies, or systems

Local

Filipinos have a long-standing tradition of saving money through the use of

“Alkansya” or piggy banks. For ancient and modern families, Alkansya has been an
efficient way to save up for big expenses. Whether it be a new cellphone, house, or
car, saving money using Alkansya is the way to go for Filipinos (Ladua, 2019).
Although the classic piggy bank is still in use, digital savings concepts have emerged
in the current period. However, because of socioeconomic differences, not everyone
experiences a smooth transition. Many Filipinos have embraced the "Ipon Challenge"
as a modern answer. This task is creating individualized savings plans that anyone in
any income bracket may achieve over the course of a year. Contributions from
participants range from little to large each day, encouraging responsible saving and
financial understanding.

The United States spends more on health care than any other country, with costs
approaching 18% of the gross domestic product (GDP). Prior studies estimated that
approximately 30% of health care spending may be considered waste. Despite efforts
to reduce overtreatment, improve care, and address overpayment, it is likely that
substantial waste in US health care spending remains.

This study aims to examine the role of involvement in saving money (ISM) to better
understand children’s saving behavior and allow a deeper understanding of financial
literacy processes among children. The emphasis on ISM is based on previous studies

FT-ARA-020-00 | STI College Las Piñas 11

indicating the central role of involvement variables in information processing among
young people.

The study was intended specifically for banks, supermarket and other business
establishment since it aimed to develop a device that could help in counting monetary
bills and make the business tasks easy. Also, this machine could help the cashiers to
count the money accurately. Aside from that, this machine could lessen the effort and
time being spent in performing routine tasks in banks.

The paper discusses the importance of assistive technology for individuals with
cognitive impairments, specifically focusing on Persons with Intellectual Disability
(PwID). Despite the potential benefits of assistive technology, many existing digital
applications are not designed with cognitive accessibility in mind. The research
emphasizes the link between self-determination and decision-making opportunities for
PwID.

The project aims to address the issue of children lacking money concepts and relying
heavily on parents for purchases of luxurious items. To instill the value of money and
encourage saving habits, the proposed solution is an innovative IoT Piggy Bank. This
technology allows children to set saving goals for desired items, fostering a goal-
directed approach to saving. The IoT Piggy Bank tracks savings in a mobile app, and
a buzzer serves as a positive reinforcement, reminding children to save regularly.

Bactad et al. (2019) in their study, stated that “Coin sorting machine, people used to
count the coins manually. This a very time consuming and tedious job for those who
handle the work. Mistakes are common due to various reasons such as eye tiredness,
fatigue, too many coins cause confuses in eyes etc. It is applied to modern innovative
design, and it is the device meeting the need in places for many small denominations
of currency. The machine has improved labor productivity and brought many
conveniences to life.” This study discusses on how the coin sorting machine
contributed to many aspects of convenience in life.

Cabrera, J. L. L., Cruz, D., Lu, B. A., Siy, J. C., & Ong, C. (2021) stated that “The
modernized circulating currency method relies heavily on coin sorting and counting
machines to prevent inconsistencies when handling and calculating coins. While the
innovation reduces the need for human resources and revolutionizes the way
establishments work with large sums of coins, accuracy in differentiating coins
becomes an issue in some existing designs.”

Foreign

Murangira, C. (2019), said that “In order to solve this problem of manual counting
and sorting, a currency coin counting and sorting machine test prototype was
developed to count and sort Ugandan currency coins through the use of CATIA
software, Arduino hardware, Arduino software and mechanical based sorting system.
The components of the machine were designed and assembled in CATIA software
before going into actual construction.” The study focuses on creating a machine that
sorts currency coin counting and sorting.

A.Paramasivam et al. (2021), stated that “The coin sorter objective is to save the time
where huge collections of coins are stored and periodically valued. The proposed
model can be extended to any type and size of coin to value the time value of the
individual. The proposed system improves accuracy and effectiveness. The proposed
coin sorting methodology and model results with exactness in determining the value
of the coin and sorting the same.” The number of times the coins were accepted and
rejected was recorded during the article's determination that the coins were tested
utilizing 10 attempts to insert them into the slot.

Senthil et al. (2022), said that “The solution of the problem falls in the
accomplishment of sustainable development goal 9 which should address industry,
innovation, and infrastructure. The motivation for the work is gained from the
stakeholders working in temples, running a small business, etc. From the survey
undertaken, the stakeholders confirmed the need of coin sorting and counting
machine. In this work, a low-cost solution is proposed after the evaluation of various
designs.” The researchers of the study considered that automatic sorting, counting,
and packaging holds a substantial solution for intensive labor works in nations like
India where there is a massive flow of coins, thus they approached the problem

through the methodological processes of design thinking.

Dabhade et al. (2020), said that “In bank, temples, supermarkets coins are collected in
huge quantity which is in the mixed form. Generally, at such places Separation and
counting is done manually. It is a tedious and monotonous job. It needs extra
manpower and our valuable time. Being a manual process, it has its own limitation. It
lacks accuracy. To overcome this situation this machine is developed. This machines
main object is to provide a simple construction and arrangement of parts for used in
connection with coin collecting tray whereby coins of different denominations
introduced in bulk, sorting mechanism which will sort the coins and coin collecting
trays which will collect the coins of different denominations according to their sizes.”
This academic paper discusses the design and several mechanical aspects in relation
to a coin sorting machine's operating mechanism.

Anupa et al. (2019), stated that “Counting and Interpret currency coins with accuracy
and high speed is a challenging problem for banks and stores, and even consumers. a
coin operated machine which can differentiate between coins accurately and
automatically is implemented. An automatic coin counting and sorting machine
prototype is developed by using ARDUINO-UNO as the main controller.”

Synthesis

The research that is currently published highlights the importance of sorting, saving,
and coin handling in a variety of worldwide situations, each of which addresses a
particular issue with money management. Through the local studies, savings practices
that are part of the culture, including using piggy banks or "Alkansya," demonstrate a
tendency toward responsible money management. International studies highlight
various aspects of money management simultaneously. These studies cover a wide
range of financial literacy and management, from examining healthcare spending in
the US to investigating children's involvement in saving money (ISM) and the use of
assistive technology for those with cognitive disabilities. Although these research
show improvements and creative ways to handle coins and manage finances, our
suggested product, BB1 which is an Arduino-powered coin saving device with a
desktop application, seeks to combine these efforts. By combining the functions of
coin sorting and saving, it expands on previous research and provides a complete

FT-ARA-020-00 | STI College Las Piñas 14

solution that is in line with the global trend toward automation in financial
procedures. This synthesis highlights how our suggested solution closes a gap by
combining sorting and saving features, thereby advancing the continuous
development of effective financial management tools. It also emphasizes the
importance and necessity of such gadgets.
