SPECIFIC COURSE INFORMATION
a. Course Description
Chemical Reaction Engineering is a study of chemical reactions, reaction kinetics and its application
in the design of chemical reactors. The course also includes determination of rate laws, reaction
mechanisms, design of continuously stirred tank reactors and tubular reactors, heterogeneous and
homogeneous systems and an introduction to heterogeneous catalytic reactors and catalyzed bed
reactors. Students are expected to learn how to design reactors according to the reaction kinetics of
the system.

b. Prerequisites CHE 306 HEAT AND MASS TRANSFER

SPECIFIC GOALS FOR THE COURSE
a. Course Objective
The students are expected to initiate reaction process improvement through knowledge of reaction
kinetics/process, data collection and analysis in the design of batch and flow reactors.

a. Course Outcomes
By the end of the course, the students will be able to:
1) Explain the fundamental principles and concepts related to chemical reaction engineering;
2) Derive the rate equation for reversible and irreversible type of reactions;
3) Determine the rate laws of a chemical reaction through integral and differential methods of
analysis given reactor data;
4) Design flow and batch reactors in series or parallel set-up according to specific parameters;
5) Evaluate a catalytic reaction system through its conversion efficiency; and
6) Reflect on personal transformations along the TIP Graduates Attributes.
c. Student Outcomes Addressed by the Course

b. identify, formulate, and solve complex engineering problems;

e. use the techniques, skills, and modern engineering tools necessary for engineering practice in
complex engineering activities.
