■ India is entering a low inflation period according to a paper authored by

leading economists (including Michael Debabrata Patra, deputy governor of
the RBI) as the impact of supply shocks and high energy costs fades.

■ India has experienced a sharp decline in venture capital funding. Some

reports estimate that venture capital funding declined from US D378 billion in
2021 to USD 26 billion in 2022 (Bain & Co.). The latest quarterly data (Q1
2023) indicates a 74% y-on-y decline in funding and a 49% decline in deal
volumes (GlobalData)

■ India’s population is forecast to surpass that of China in April. The

population is estimated to be 1.425 billion, according to the UN.

Snapshot: Automotive sector

■ The automotive sector released sales data for the full year 2022-23. The
sector saw a strong recovery from the pandemic slowdown, though factors
such as a shortage of electronic components remains an issue.

■ Sales growth in 2023/24 is likely to be more muted as high inflation feeds

through to prices and less attractive promotions. However, the substantial
increase in central government capex announced in the budget should aid
vehicle sales.

Electric vehicles landscape

■ Electrification in the two wheeler segment has grown substantially to

approximately 5-6% of sales by volume from 2% in 2021.

■ FAME II subsidies may not be continued beyond March 2024; the scheme was
aimed at facilitating demand in the EV market and creating EV charging
infrastructure. At its initial 2019 launch, FAME II’s objectives were to support
7,000 electric buses, 500,000 electric three wheelers, 55,000 passenger cars
and 1 million two wheelers. Relaunched in 2021, the scheme has been
extended through to March 2024, but it appears unlikely that it will then be
continued as the government suggests that the funding has not been utilised as
required.

■ Incentives such as lower GST rates and waivers for EVs and charging stations
also exist. In addition to this, the automotive (including components) sector can
benefit from the PLI scheme which aims to boost clean energy production in
India.

■ Whilst the government set a target of 46,397 public charging stations (PCS) by
2023, the current figure is 5,254.

Ola Electric charging station

■ The sector has attracted a substantial amount of funding from blue chip
investors such as Temsek, BP Ventures and Morgan Stanley.
