b) Draw the block diagram of a closed loop automatic process control system. Write down 03
the functions of Transmitter and its associated basic building blocks in a feedback
process control system.
2. a) Draw the P&I symbols and corresponding tag number (if applicable) of the following. 03
(i) Orifice type Flow Recorder; (ii) Level Transmitter; (iii) I/P Converter; (iv) Electrical
Signal; (v) Impulse line; (iv)Temperature Controller with Indicating, Recording and
Alarm facilities.
c) ‘Measured process variables are transmitted from field to control room in form of a 03
current signal instead of voltage signal’ – Explain and justify with proper circuit
diagrams.
b) In a level control system, water level in a vertically mounted storage tank is maintained 03
at the desired value. The minimum and maximum allowable level is 30% and 80% of the
maximum height of the tank respectively. To maintain the desired level as 50% of the
allowable range the control valve is maintained at 55% opening position. Calculate the
transmitter output current, control action and output of I/P converter (in corresponding
standard rage of current and pneumatic signal) at zero deviation.

4. a) What is ‘Neutral Zone’? Why two – position controllers are used with neutral zone? 02
b) What is Proportional Band (PB)? Explain the relation between PB and Proportional Gain 02
of a Proportional controller.
c) A Proportional controller is used to control the height of water in a tank where the water 02
level can vary from 0 – 10 m. Calculate the value of PB and Kc that will set the water
level at desired height of 5.0 m. The controller is required to fully close the valve when
water level rises to 5.6 m and fully open the control valve when the water level falls
down to 4.6 m.
5. a) Write the governing equation of PI control mode. Draw and explain the characteristics of 02
PI controller.
c) What is ‘derivative kick’? Write down some remedies to eliminate ‘derivative kick’. 02
