The revised syllabus is based on five sections, each of which include topics

studied at AS Level and A Level:


1. Business and its environment
2. Human resource management (HRM)
3. Marketing
4. Operations management
5. Finance and accounting

One particularly significant change is that strategy is part of each of the functional
areas at A Level and not just a stand-alone section.

Changes include the following:


 Intrapreneurs has been introduced as a topic alongside entrepreneurs
 Business growth contains some new material and has been moved to the AS
syllabus
 Customer relationship marketing has been added
 The purpose and roles of human resource management (HRM) has been
introduced
 All material on costs is in the AS syllabus and some new material on break-even
analysis
 Scenario planning and blue ocean strategy have been added
 A number of new theories of leadership have been introduced and all material on
this topic has been moved to A Level

Topics in the current syllabus which will be no longer covered include:


 The marketing mix: the role of the customer (the 4Cs) and using the internet for
the 4Ps/4Cs
 Sources of finance: short and long-term finance
 Cash flow: the construction of cash flow forecasts
 Investment appraisal: the internal rate of return (IRR)
 Strategic management: Chandler’s assertion and strategy and competitive
advantage

Exam Papers

 There are 4 Papers


 There are now two papers at Cambridge International A Level, Paper 3 and Paper
4. The duration is reduced for Paper 3.
 All papers are retitled to better describe the focus of each one.
 The levels-based marking criteria was revised for all papers to maintain validity
and reliability of assessment.
Difficulties students are experiencing
 Difficult to understand concept
 Inability to apply strategic part to tackle paper 4 with high level of critical
thinking
 Unable to develop critical thinking to answer questions on evaluation and
analysis part
 Inability to answer questions where there is analysis from several chapters.
 Limited time for papers- no time management - Paper 4 is only 1h15 Min for 2
essays

Difficulties for teachers


 Limited time for content delivery - Bulky content
 Not enough time to carry out classwork and do evaluation in class
 Not enough resources available for teachers
 Students do not get prepared (do enough reading) before coming to class
 There are not enough papers as references for practice after syllabus have
change
