• An internetwork is formed by connecting networks together

• Downloading is the process of copying a file (any type of file) from a
server on the Internet to your device
• Streaming is the process of having a file delivered to your device in a
constant and steady stream

Basic Network Technology
• Networks transfer data in small units called packets
• Data networks use TCP/IP as their networking protocol
• LANs are private networks

• Every computer that participates on a data network must have

sensitive data or high-volume streaming

Wireless Connections – Wi-Fi
• Wi-Fi gives us networking without wires
• Most modern broadband routers can be used to set up a Wi-Fi network
• A LAN that supports Wi-Fi is called a Wireless LAN (WLAN)

• Adapters, Signals and Bands
• Devices use wireless adapters to participate on a WLAN
• WLANs use 2 different frequency bands: 2.4GHz and 5GHz
• WLAN signals weaken as they get farther away from the transmitter
(the wireless access point)

• Text – sending and receiving text messages (SMS) and picture

Internet, including app updates, notifications, GPS information,

• Plan Add-Ons – features such as international calling, theft and
damage insurance, hotspot tethering

Cellular Devices
• Mobile Data
• Any time you download an app, check your email, surf the Internet or
check Facebook, you use mobile data (unless you are connected to Wi-
Fi)
• Cell carriers allow only so much mobile data per month as dictated in
the terms of your data plan
• Exceeding the data limit can result in overage charges
• Mobile data can be very expensive (even though it is the same data
that you can access on Wi-Fi for no charge)

Hard-Wired Phones
• Are connected to a telephone jack in the
wall using a standard telephone line
(copper wiring)
• Connect to the telephone network
• Are extremely reliable and provide
excellent sound quality

Voice Mail
• A centralized system for sending, storing, and retrieving audio
messages
• Each extension is linked to a voice mailbox
• A caller can record a voice message if the line is not answered or is
busy
• The system will provide a notification that a new voice mail message is
waiting

• Your greeting message should include:
• Your name, department, and company name
• A brief apology that you cannot take a call right now
• An invitation to leave a message
• An indication of when the caller can expect a return call
• Any additional options that might be available

• Plan to include the following items in your voice mail message:
• Identify yourself by first and last name, and if appropriate, state the name of your
company
• State the number at which you can be reached, and if appropriate, during which time

• Mention the date and time you are calling
• Briefly describe the nature and purpose of your call
• Ask the person to call you back at their earliest convenience
• Repeat the number at which you can be reached
• Thank them for their time
