Introduction
Flex Fuel, or flexible fuel, is an
alternative fuel made of a
combination of gasoline and
methanol or ethanol. Flex-fuel are
those that have internal combustion
engines designated to run on more
than one type of fuel.
This technology isn’t new. It was
developed in the early 1990s and
used in mass produced 1994 Ford
Taurus. By 2017,there were
approximately 21 million flex fuel
vehicle on the road.
In India, the flex fuel engine ate
designated to run on petrol and
ethanol. Besides India, the US and
Brazil are other countries that have
been focusing increasing on flex
fuel technology, apart from a few
modification to the engine and fuel
system.
Ethanol Fuels
E10 fuel contains 10% ethanol
and 90% gasoline. It can be used
in ordinary gas engines and
makes up the majority of gas
sold in the US.
E15 fuel contains 15% ethanol
and 85% gasoline. It’s not as
common as E10 yet, but 95% of
passenger vehicles in the US
now support E15.
E25 is a 25% ethanol blend that
hasn’t caught on as well as the
others. Even so, you can use it in
BMW and Mini vehicles.
E98 is a 98% ethanol blend that
you won’t see at your local gas
station. It’s commonly used for
compatible racecars, though.
