1.1 What do Intel® Processor numbers mean?
Processor numbers for the 3rd Generation Intel® Xeon® Scalable processors use an alphanumeric scheme
based on performance, features, and processor generation following the brand and its modifier. The first
digit in the four-number sequence indicated the performance and feature level, the second indicated the
processor generation, and the next two are SKU numbers. Where applicable, either one or two alpha
suffixes appear at the end of the processor name, which indicate integrations and optimizations.

Technology

2.1 Speed Select Technology

Intel® Speed Select Technology is an umbrella term for a collection of features that provide more granular
control over CPU performance. There are four different Speed Select profiles, see their sections for more
information.

• Speed Select Technology - Performance Profile (SST-PP)

• Speed Select Technology - Base Frequency (SST-BF)
• Speed Select Technology - Core Power (SST-CP)
• Speed Select Technology - Turbo Frequency (SST-TF)

6 Dell EMC PowerEdge 3rd Generation Intel® Xeon® Scalable Platform Offering
2.1.1 Speed Select Technology - Performance Profile (SST-PP) (-Y)
The ability to set a guaranteed base frequency for a specific number of cores and assign this performance
profile to a specific application/workload to guarantee performance requirements. New in this generation
is the ability to provide additional frequency profile configuration opportunities, including base and max
turbo frequencies for SSE (+AVX2 Light), Intel® Advanced Vector Extensions 2 (Intel® AVX2 – AVX2
Heavy), and Intel® AVX-512.

These processors might be interesting for:

Segment Usage
CSPs often buy multiple types of CPUs and servers for their diverse
compute needs (for example, external product offering versus internal
• Communication Service business support). Intel® SST-PP allows a CPU to be run with three
Provider (CSP) different performance profiles (for example, the CPU has a higher
base frequency with few active cores), meaning that one CPU can be
used in (or repurposed for) multiple usage scenarios.
Intel® SST-PP enables IaaS providers to increase the CPU base
frequency (by turning off cores) and use one CPU to meet multiple
• Infrastructure as a
Service-Level Agreements (SLAs). This results in an SKU reduction
Service (IaaS)
and an improved server utilization, which reduces the Total Cost of
Ownership (TCO).
It is often time consuming to replace and upgrade servers housed in
• Colocation Center colocation centers. Intel® SST-PP will enable a single server to be
(COLO) optimized for more workloads, reducing the need to replace and
• Hub Management upgrade servers. This reduces the Time to Market (TTM), improving
their top and bottom line.
Day and night usage:
• Financial Services
Commonly, media studios use servers for Virtual Device Infrastructure
Industry (FSI)
(VDI) during the day and rendering at night. VDIs require fewer, higher
• Digital Content Creation
performing cores. Rendering applications perform better with many
(DDC)
cores running in parallel.

SST-PP provides the capability to configure the CPU to run at 3 distinct operating points. Each operating
point is defined by a core count with a base frequency associated to that core count.

• Higher core count with lower base frequency

• Lower core count with higher base frequency

With SST-PP, the feature can be enabled in the BIOS at boot or during runtime if the OS or hypervisor
supports this.

2.1.2 Speed Select Technology - Base Frequency (SST-BF)
Allows the configuration of a guaranteed higher base frequency, for a specific number of cores, to support
those workloads and applications that are not optimized for turbo frequencies.

With SST-BF, the feature can be enabled in the BIOS at boot or during runtime if the OS or hypervisor
supports this.

How many cores are high or low priority and which cores are high or low priority are set by Intel and
cannot change.

Max Turbo Frequency

2.1.3 Speed Select Technology - Core Power (SST-CP)

Enables flexibility for workloads that benefit from higher base frequency on a subset of the processor’s
cores. While the max turbo frequency across the cores remain constant across the cores, a subset of the
cores can be assigned as to run at a higher base frequency than specified, while the other cores run at
lower base frequency. The OS or the Hypervisor (VMM) assigns a weight to each core. When surplus
frequency is available, the Power Control Unit distributes surplus frequency according to cores weights.
Traditionally, Power Control Unit distributes surplus power equitably (also known as with no priority)
amongst cores.

Turbo Frequency

8 Dell EMC PowerEdge 3rd Generation Intel® Xeon® Scalable Platform Offering
2.1.4 Speed Select Technology - Turbo Frequency (SST-TF)
Enables flexibility for workloads that benefit from higher turbo frequency on a subset of the processor’s
cores. While the base frequency remains constant across the cores, a subset of the cores can be
assigned to run at a higher turbo frequency than specified, while the other cores run at lower turbo
frequency.

Software chooses cores to become capable of turbo frequencies beyond traditional max frequency limit.
These cores are referred to as High Priority (HP) cores. No cores need to be idled. Intel® SST-TF then
clips all other CPU cores max frequency to SKU-defined limit. These are referred to as Low Priority (LP)
cores. Trading off HP and LP cores frequency limits keeps CPU within defined TDP, reliability, and power
budgets. Software can turn on/off Intel® SST-TF and change a core’s priority at runtime. No core mask
dependency and any core can be high priority at any time using classes of service (CLOS) interfaces.

2.2 Intel® Software Guard Extensions (SGX)
Intel® Software Guard Extensions (SGX) provides enhanced security protections for application data
independent of operating system or hardware configuration. This is accomplished by cryptographic
isolation at the most granular application level, enabling fine-grained data protection within a hyper-
focused trust boundary.

• Helps protect against SW attacks even if the OS, drivers, BIOS or Hypervisor are compromised.
• Increases protections for secrets (data, keys) even when attacker has full control of platform.
• Helps prevent attacks, such as memory bus snooping, memory tampering, and “cold boot”
attacks, against memory contents in RAM.
• Provides an option for hardware-based attestation capabilities to measure and verify valid code
and data signatures.

Optimized SKUs

3.1 NFV Optimized (-N)

The -N suffix processors have been optimized for use in networking applications:

• L3 forwarding
• 5G UPF
• OVS DPDK
• VPP FIB router
• VPP IPsec
• web server/NGINX
• vEPC
• vBNG
• vCMTS

For these workloads the processor will maintain the marked frequency (also called P1) and assumes a
less intensive core workload for the TDP operating point.

These processors may not maintain their marked frequency while running some standard server
workloads (ex: SPECint*, SPECfp*, POVRAY*). In these scenarios, observed frequency can be 1-2 bins
lower than the marked frequency even if there is thermal margin to Tcase_max as TDP is enforced by the
power control unit (PCU).

NOTE: Intel® recommends potential customers do performance testing before committing to a design
using these new processors and avoid relying on previous experience and frequency scaling
projections to estimate expected performance.

3.2 Media Processing Optimized (-M)

The -M suffix processors are specifically designed for Media, AI and HPC Workloads. It has a lower TDP
than comparable processors. It is optimized around AVX frequencies to deliver better performance per
Watt around Media, AI and HCP workloads. The deterministic base frequency rating is only applicable for
Media and AI. Other workloads may see throttling.

NOTE: Intel® recommends potential customers do performance testing before committing to a design
using these new processors and avoid relying on previous experience and frequency scaling
projections to estimate expected performance.

3.3 IaaS Optimized (-P)

The -P suffix processors are IaaS optimized processors specifically designed for cloud IaaS environments
to deliver higher frequencies and core count at constrained TDPs.

These processors assume 70% CPU utilization. The deterministic base frequency rating is only applicable
for VM workloads. Other workloads may see throttling.

The main differences are:

• Only support Standard RAS features

• The SGX Enclave size is 8GB

NOTE: Intel® recommends potential customers do performance testing before committing to a design
using these new processors and avoid relying on previous experience and frequency scaling
projections to estimate expected performance.

11 Dell EMC PowerEdge 3rd Generation Intel® Xeon® Scalable Platform Offering
3.4 Liquid Cooling Optimized (-Q)
The -Q suffix processors are designed to run with Direct Liquid Cooling (DLC). They offer higher core
count and higher frequencies at the same TDP as comparable processor options.

Figure 2 - Dell EMC PowerEdge R750 with DLC

3.5 Maximum SGX Enclave Size (-S)

The -S suffix processors have 512 GB SGX memory enclave size on the CPU, opposed to the default 64
GB in the Platinum and Gold SKUs and 8 GB for Silver.

3.6 Optimized for NEBS (-T)

The -T suffix processors are a continuation of the Intel® Xeon® 2nd Generation Scalable -T processors that
are designed specifically for Network Environment-Building System (NEBS). These processors are
designed for sustained, long term usage (10 years) and have a longer supply life of 7 years. These
processors may be of particular interest to Telco’s or workloads that require long term, sustained
operation, or higher reliability.

3.7 Single Socket (-U)

The -U suffix processors are an offering that support a single processor configuration. These “U” 1-socket
offerings are optimized for a higher core count & frequency at a lower cost vs. the standard 2-socket
processors. Networking customers such as edge server, router, next gen central office and security
applications may be interested in these processor offerings.

The -U model numbers all share identical cores & frequencies to their standard SKU offerings. These
processors will only be supported in 1-socket configurations. If a customer wishes to upgrade from the -U
1-socket parts to a standard 2-socket part, the “U” 1-socket part must be removed & replaced with 2 x 2-
socket standard processors.

12 Dell EMC PowerEdge 3rd Generation Intel® Xeon® Scalable Platform Offering
3.8 SaaS Optimized (-V)
The -V suffix processors are SaaS optimized processors specifically designed for cloud environments to
deliver high rack density and maximize VM per cores at the lowest TCO possible. They will give high core
count at lower TDPs.

These processors assume 70% CPU utilization and have lower DDR4 frequencies to optimize TDPs. The
deterministic base frequency rating is only applicable for VM workloads. Other workloads may see
throttling. They offer SST Performance Profile allowing to select lower TDPs than comparable processors.

The main differences are:

• Memory channel only runs at 2933 MT/s

• The SGX Enclave size is 8GB

NOTE: Intel® recommends potential customers do performance testing before committing to a design
using these new processors and avoid relying on previous experience and frequency scaling
projections to estimate expected performance.
