Prova 5

1) How can a pilot get prepared to start a missed approach?

Normally, the pilot is always ready for a missed approach procedure. If everything goes well during approach, the pilot lands.
A pilot should be attentive at this critical moment. If something goes wrong during approach and the pilot does not initiate
immediately a missed approach procedure, it may result in irreversible outcomes.

2) How was your first flight as a pilot? How did you feel? Do you remember the aircraft?
My first flight as a pilot was unforgettable in my life. As flight instructor, I applied to the student all the knowledge acquired in
previous trainings since I was a pilot student, in other words, I performed all the tasks that a pilot needs to do before flight, during
flight and upon landing.
At that moment, I was realizing a dream since I was a child. Simply, I was flying and teaching on a Cessna 152 a student to
become an airplane pilot.

3) Have you ever had any abnormal situation during your flight?
Recently, I experienced an abnormal situation during a flight instruction, the aircraft's tire burst after takeoff and I had to
perform an emergency landing at the Sorocaba Airport. Luckily, everything went well; because I carried out it safely.
After the landing, the aircraft vibrated a lot taxiing from the runway to the airport apron where it was parked and the bust tire
replaced by another new tire.

4) How was your training in emergency situations? How air companies influence the training for pilots?
As matter of fact, my training to emergency situations was very good and complete.
I performed my entire training at Sorocaba Flight School, which has a very good quality in its training.
I had excellent flight instructors who gave me a good support and feedback.
I had a massive emergency situations training and the maneuvers were very accurate.
Nowadays, I may say that I acquired a very good situational awareness.
The training for pilots at air companies is aligned to the international civil aviation rules. These training complies items such as
hydraulic system failure, engine failure, engine power loss, etc. A seasonal recycling training for pilots at air companies
increases pilot’s skills and it also improves flight effectiveness.

5) What is V1 and V2? Have you ever aborted takeoff?

Based on my knowledge, V1 is defined as the speed beyond which the takeoff should no longer be aborted and V2 is the
speed at which the aircraft may safely be climbed to a safer altitude with one engine inoperative.
Lately, I have flown only piston engine aircraft. Once, I aborted a takeoff during a flight instruction due engine power engine
power loss. Posteriorly, the mechanic discovered that the sparks plugs soiled with lubricating oil were the causes of the engine
failure.

6) What do you think about the new technology that is replacing the pilots? Do you agree with this technology?
Nowadays, pilots have a lot of activities on board, such as selection of aeronautical charts that will be used during the flight,
air traffic control communication, management of aircraft’s instruments and attention to avoid essential traffic.
With the increase in aeronautical technology, some activities that are previously assigned to the pilot are being replaced by
these new technologies. These improvements gave to the pilot more time for other activities. For example: During the flight, the
pilots have more time to analyze Instrument landing procedure.
So, I agree with these technologies that are replacing pilots activities ‘’in favor of a flight safer’’.

7) What is the importance of the air transportation?

Based on my knowledge, the importance of the air transportation is the safety and quickly at which people and cargo are
transported by aircraft compared to maritime and road transportation.
Nowadays, there are modern airplanes with its powers engines capable to carry cargo and people from a place to another,
traveling long distances in a very short time.
In the past, people traveled to other countries by ship. Their journeys took several days crossing the oceans to reach theirs
destiny. Nowadays, the same trip can be done by airplane in a few hours with comfort and safety.
1) Please describe this picture to me.
Here, we’ve got a Picture of a light blue, gray and white, low-wing, twin-engine turbofan engine aircraft. It is a Boeing 777 on
the passengers carrying version because there are windows crossing the fuselage.
This aircraft belongs to Korean Airlines.
Looking at this photo makes me believe that this situation happened at a big airport because it supports the operation of an
aircraft of this size.
This picture shows the plane stopped on the runway and a lot of foam spread out on the ground and on the engine as well.
I don’t know what could have motivated this situation. Probably before riching V1 the port side engine has ingested a bird or
some foreign object that was on the runway, it caught fire and the pilots decided to reject the take-off.
I may say that this picture is rich in details.
I can point out a RUNWAY, TWO RED FIRE TRUCKS on the left side the aircraft, FIREFIGHTERS walking around the effected
engine and ESCAPE SLIDES attached to some aircraft doors.
It is not possible to see in this picture OTHER PLANES, JET WAYS, AIRPORT EQUIPMENTS, AIRPORT GROND STAFF,
WOODED AREA and BUILDINGS.
In this photo I can’t see the weather conditions. It may have been raining at the time of the event, because in the picture I can
see the runway a little damp.

2) Choose one:
A) What do you think happened before this picture was taken?
Before this picture was taken, I think this aircraft was performing taxing from the airport apron to hold point. The pilots were
concentrated performing all the tasks that a pilot needs to do following the before take-off check-list and flight attendants
assisted the passengers assuming the correct posture on their seats to takeoff. At the hold point, this aircraft was cleared to
take-off and during this procedure something happened wrong. The right engine ingested a bird or some foreing object that was
over the runway and caught fire. Before reaching V1 the captain rejected the take-off. When the aircraft stopped on the runway,
flight attendants diploid the scape slides to some aircraft doors, passengers evacuated the aircraft quickly and firefighters got put
out the fire.

B) What do you think these people were doing before this picture was taken?
Before this picture was taken, I think the firefighters were putting out the fire on the left engine, flight attendants were operating
the scape slides and assisting the occupants of the plane evacuating the plane fastly and some of them were doing some type of
work at the airport.

C) What do you think was happening before this picture was taken?
Before this picture was taken, I think the firefighters were putting out the fire on the left engine, flight attendants were operating
the scape slides and assisting the occupants of the plane evacuating the plane fastly and some of them were doing some type of
work at the airport.

D) Can you create a short story based on this picture? Use your imagination.
It was the Flight 294 of the Korean Airlines from which was cleared to takeoff from Seoul Airport to Campinas, São Paulo
International Airport Airport.
Before take-off the pilots performed all the tasks that a pilot needs to do following the before take-off check-list and flight
attendants assisted all passengers assuming the correct posture on their seats for take-off.
During take-off its Boeing 777 has suffered a bird-ingestion on the left engine and it flamed out. Luckily, pilots managed to
abort the takeoff before reaching V1. When the aircraft stopped on the runway, flight attendants diploid the scape slides to some
aircraft doors, passengers evacuated the aircraft quickly and firefighters got put out the fire.

3) Imagine that this picture has just been taken:

What do you think will happen next?
The runway will remain closed for hours because the competent authorities will initiate an investigation on the aircraft to gather
information to become aware into what would have motivated this event. After it, the aircraft will be taken to the air company
hangar where it will be parked; the left engine will be removed from the wing and it will be completely disassembled to become
aware of the damage caused. The runway will suffer a cleaning and the operations of the airport will be normalized.

4) If a similar situation had happened to you, do you think this situation would have ended up in the same way?
As far as I know, All pilot briefings are sad: '' If during the run for take-off before reaching V1 the engine fails, it should be
aborted immediately. So, considering any engine failure during the run for take-off performed by me and before reaching V1,
such as engine fire, engine power loss, etc. I would also abort the take-off anyway.

5) In your opinion, how can passengers keep themselves safe during an emergency evacuation?
In my opinion, for passengers to keep safe during an emergency evacuation, they must remain calm and follow the flight
attendants instructions given before to take-off and during evacuation. Only it.

6) Now, I am going to read a statement to you and then you will have to tell me to what extent you agree or disagree with it:
“Although pilots receive a lot of trainings on emergency situations they don’t have the same behavior when they face up to an
emergency situation that they have never trained before.”
I fully agree with these statements. Although pilots receive a lot of emergency training situations during their careers, but in a
real emergency situation, it is completely different. They do not present the same behavior as in previous training. Some of them
remain calm and managed to conduct the situation easily and others remain nervous and don’t get to figure out and sort out the
problem and the tendency is to worsen.
