TECHNOLOGY PLANNING

GRADE 8 TERM 3 WEEK 6

TOPIC METHODOLOGY RESOURCES

WHAT I AM GOING TO TEACH? HOW I AM GOING TO TEACH? WHAT I AM GOING

USE?

Note to teacher:
1. Social distancing rules apply to every lesson.
2. No group activities.
3. No sharing of tools and equipment.
4. 4. Practical work to be conducted as a teacher demonstration.
1. Resources illustrated
• Sketches (2D) showing gear
systems that: in DBE Workbook
• Provide an output (mstworkbooks.co.za)
force four times greater or relevant textbooks
than the input force Drawing tools
(MA = 1:4). Graph paper
• Provide double the 2
TEACHERS rotation rate on a Recap Driver Gear
driven axle at 90o to Recap Driven Gear
the driver axle. Recap Idler Gear
• SYSTEM ANALYSIS – bicycle
gear system
• Analysis of the gears used on
modern bicycles –
terminology: master/slave or
driver/driven; chain wheel; 3. Terminology:
cogs.
Master/Slave
• SYSTEMS DIAGRAMS
• Analyse a mechanical Driver/ Driven
system by breaking it into
input-process-output. Chain wheels
• Draw a Systems Diagram for
Cogs
a gear system with a
mechanical advantage of 4. Drawing Systems
4:1. Diagrams
• Plan a mechanical system to
produce a specific output.
Systems diagram for a gear
train with the driven gear
rotating faster than the driver.

LEARNER
ACTIVITIES
1. Learners recap gears: Driver/Driven/Idler
2. Learners observe examples either given to them or examples in their textbook of
gears put together to illustrate direction of rotation of gears and mechanical
advantage.
3. Learners draw simple bevel gears, followed by Driver and Driven and then
Driver/Driven and Idler gear system
4. Learners complete systems diagrams

Worksheet
1. After demonstrating, using a model system to explain Driver and Driven, the teacher
could use any resource to show the learners how to draw 2D drawings of Driver and
Driven gears. Allow learners to do the same in their workbooks

2D DRAWING OF BEVEL GEARS 2D DRAWING OF SPUR GEARS

Page | 2
How to draw gears in 2D

When you draw a gear wheel, you show a number of circle sizes, but do not have to show
the gear teeth. The specifications for the gear wheels and teeth are shown using notes
and tables.

2. An illustration of bevel gears with a mechanical advantage of 1:2 is shown beneath.

a. Redraw the bevel gears in your workbook and make a 2D drawing of the spur
gears with a MA of 1:4

You may use grid paper to draw the gear systems.

3. ANALYSIS/TERMINOLOGY

With the use of flash cards, identify the following parts of a modern bicycle.

4. SYSTEM DIAGRAM OF A BICYCLE

a. Now try to draw a system diagram of a motorcar. What will be the INPUT, PROCESS
AND OUTPUT?

5. SYSTEM DIAGRAM OF THE GEAR SYSTEM OF A BICYCLE

The system diagram of a bicycle gear system with a mechanical advantage of 1:4 is
illustrated below. When the driver gear is rotated once the driven gear will do 4 rotations.

a. Draw in your workbook a system diagram for a bicycle gear system with a MA of
4: 1
