The Palomar StarLux500 is an electro-optical device intended for safe and

reliable hair reduction, pigmented lesion treatment, leg vein treatment, acne
treatment, deep tissue heating, and soft tissue coagulation. Personnel operating
and maintaining the StarLux500 should be familiar with the safety information
provided in this section.

Palomar assumes no liability whatsoever for any damage or injury resulting from
an application of a product which is not in strict accordance with the instructions
provided with the product. Palomar also assumes no liability for any damage or
injury arising as a result of user error or mistake, including but not limited to
injury arising from user’s lack of qualification to administer the treatment in the
individual circumstances, or as a result of errors or mistakes committed by such
user who would otherwise be considered as having the necessary professional
skills to apply such treatment.

Read the Installation and Operation Instructions thoroughly before connecting the
base system and chiller unit to the main power connection prior to use. The
system must be set, regulated and used in accordance with the instructions for use
listed in the handpiece appendices. Failure to observe usual safety precautions
may present a risk of hazardous exposure to laser or pulse light radiation.

All persons operating the StarLux500 System or in the vicinity of the system must be
aware of the potential hazards of the system output and should take the proper
safeguards as described in the Operator’s Manual. Be certain all personnel carefully
review the safety precautions pertaining to the Palomar StarLux500 System. Only
authorized individuals with appropriate safety training and knowledge should operate,
assist in the operation of, or provide maintenance/service to the system. One person
should be assigned to be responsible for system controls during the procedure. High
voltages are present inside the StarLux500 System, and any pulsed-light or laser
emitting device can cause injury if used improperly. Personnel who work with
pulsed light and laser sources should always be aware of the possible dangers and
should take the proper safeguards as described in the operator’s manual.

The Palomar StarLux500 System is an “eye-safe” device when operated

properly, however, as with any laser and pulsed light device, never look
directly at the light output. During treatments, all persons must wear
protective eyewear to protect against possible eye damage.
No one other than Palomar Medical authorized personnel may service inside

1.4 General Safety

• Delivering excessive energy to the treatment site may cause thermal damage to the skin,
resulting in superficial damage to the skin, crusting, skin redness, hypopigmentation or
hyperpigmentation.
• Consumer safety is assured by a well-trained staff.
• Consumer education is also important and information about the nature of the treatment
should be provided.
• Never look directly at the light coming from the distal end of the handpiece as this may
cause eye injury.
• Never direct the laser or pulsed light at anything other than the targeted area.
• Never point the handpiece so that it discharges into free space. Make sure it is pointed
at, and in full contact with, the treatment site during treatment or when performing test
spots.

Warning
Do not submerse the handpiece in any solution. Submersing the handpiece may cause a
hazardous condition for the user and possibly the consumer. Submersing may also cause the
system to malfunction. Apply disinfecting or cleaning solution to wipes or gauze pads to be
used on the handpiece. If the handpiece becomes submersed in fluid or leaks any cooling
water, discontinue use of the handpiece immediately and call Palomar for replacement.

Do not use the handpiece if it is cracked, the sapphire lens missing, cracked, or burned.

1.5 Room Safety

• Identify the treatment room clearly.

• Restrict entry to the treatment room when the system is in use. Allow access to the
treatment room only to those personnel both well trained and essential to the procedure.
• When the system is not in use, ensure that it is rendered inaccessible to unauthorized
personnel. Remove the key to disable the unit.
• Make sure that all personnel are familiar with the system controls and know how to shut
down the system instantly.
• Block all appropriate windows, etc. to prevent light from escaping the treatment room.

1.5.1 Electrical Safety

Chapter 1 P/N 5500-0000 rev X2 1-4

Technical Service Manual StarLux500

• The electrical safety hazard of any laser and pulsed light system cannot be ignored or taken
lightly. Although the Palomar StarLux500 System has many safety features in it’s design,
certain precautions must be observed.
• It is possible for the high voltage components to retain a charge even after the system
has been turned off. Therefore, no part of the exterior housing of the main system or
handpiece should be removed except by trained and authorized technicians.
• This may expose personnel to dangerous high voltages and potentially dangerous light
radiation. Only a qualified Palomar Service Representative must perform any service
requiring access to the interior of the instrument. To contact a Service Representative, dial
toll free 1-800-PALOMAR or 1-781-993-2315.
• Customer Service Email: customer_service@palomarmedical.com

1.5.2 FIRE SAFETY

The potential for fire hazard exists because of the nature of light treatment. The
absorption of emitted energy, no matter how brief, may raise the temperature of any
material. This phenomenon is the basis of many useful medical and surgical applications;
it is also the reason that these applications often require precautions against the risk of
igniting combustible materials in and around the treatment area.

When the Palomar StarLux500 System is used, the following precautions should be
taken:
• Anesthetics administered must be approved as non-flammable.
• Ensure that the system and ancillary equipment are working properly before beginning
a procedure.
• Never direct the light output at anything other than the intended treatment site,
especially at reflective objects such as metal surgical instruments.
• Be certain the footswitch is clean and working properly. Place the footswitch where it
will not be mistaken for another piece of equipment.
• Exercise particular care in the use of oxygen. The presence of oxygen can accelerate the
combustion of any flammable material.
• Avoid using combustible materials, such as gauze and drapes, in the treatment area. When
they are required, these materials may be made fire-retardant by keeping them moist with
water or saline. Clothing should be kept well away from the area of treatment.
• Know the location and operation of the nearest fire extinguisher.
• Always turn off the system and remove the key when ever possible. This will prevent
accidental light emissions.

2.1 Introduction

The Palomar StarLux™500 Pulsed Light and Laser System is designed, by attaching
multiple treatment handpieces, to deliver pulses of broadband incoherent light or laser light
to a predetermined target site. The Palomar StarLux500 System is specially developed for
permanent hair reduction, pigmented and vascular lesion treatment, leg vein treatment, acne,
fractional soft tissue coagulation, fractional skin tightening through soft tissue coagulation,
and other clinical applications.
The Palomar StarLux500 System is user friendly, allowing the treatment provider to select
output fluence (J/cm2) and pulsewidth (ms). This enables the user to safely perform
treatments on skin types I-VI as indicated in Starlux Treatment Guide.
The system is housed in a protective cabinet with includes the connection to an external
cooling unit. Delivery of the energy to the treatment site is through a handpiece that contains a
cooled sapphire window.
Light is directly administered to the treatment area by placing the handpiece window in
contact with the skin and pressing an attached footswitch in conjunction with pressing the
handpiece trigger button. There is also an option to deliver light pulses by pressing the
footswitch only.

The “Cooltip” supplies contact cooling to the skin during treatments, this minimizes the
potential for skin damage and allows for higher fluence during treatment.

2.3 Theory of Operation

2.3.1 General Description:
The StarLux500 system uses Analog and Digital Logic Circuits, a Microprocessor and
Software, High Voltage, and Flashlamp or Laser to create pulses of light for treatment.
The system can operate with input voltage range 85VAC to 265VAC 50Hz/60Hz. The
system’s internal power supply adjusts to the incoming line voltage.

The system contains sub-assemblies as described below:

1. External Cooling Unit, Provides cooling for the CoolTip in the handpiece, monitors
the water flow and temperature of the lamp and Cooltip loops.
2. TEC module (3 Dual Chamber TEC’s) within the cooling unit generates cooling for
the Cooltip.
3. Display Module, Contains the Main Processor, interconnect board and display screen.
4. Power Supply Module, provides the DC voltage to operate the System, Lamp
Controller and Thermocontroller boards.
5. Handpiece, provides the light to the target tissue and contact cooling. All calibration
data stored in handpiece.

2.3.2 Sequence of Operation:

2.3.2.1 A power cord is connected to both the base unit and external cooling unit, a handpiece
is connected and in the holster, and the coolant reservoir is full. Turn the main power switch on
the cooling unit and then the base unit. AC voltage is then applied to the Power Factor
Controller Board. This converts the base unit input voltage to supply 390VDC to the capacitor
charging circuit and Thermocontroller board. This board supplies 12VDC and 6VDC to all
boards and the display module. A “Menu/Next” screen will be displayed. (screen 1)

Screen 1 Screen 2
The system will read the EEprom information from the handpiece, the software will
determine the type of handpiece installed and then load the proper parameters for the
handpiece. (screen 2) If a handpiece communication error is detected during this time, it
will be displayed on the screen. Otherwise, the system will proceed to key switch screen.

Chapter 2 P/N 5500-0000 rev X1 2-4

Technical Service Manual StarLux500

2.3.2.2 With the key switch in the off position, the ‘turn key’ symbol will be displayed on
the touch screen panel. Note that the colored band at the top of the screen is the same color
as the handpiece installed. (screen 3).

Screen 3 Screen 4

2.3.2.3 When the key is turned to the “ON” (clockwise) position, the microprocessor will
check all operating systems for voltages or other faults and the cooling module power will
then switch on. As the system continues to power up, checks for water flow and
temperature will also take place. The lamp will start simmering. (screen 4)

Screen 5 (Cool Down)

2.3.2.4 If the system does not have any immediate faults, the “Cool Down” screen with
the hourglass symbol will be displayed.(screen 5) The cooling module is now fully
operational and if there are any faults not recognized during the system startup test, they
will be displayed now. The coolant reservoir holds about 350cc of cooling fluid. It is 2
chamber tank separated for the Cooltip loop and the Lamp loop.

Lamp Loop Cooling: If the lamp loop temperature is 35˚C or higher, the fans run at
100% speed. If the lamp loop is under 30˚C, then the fans will run at 80% speed. Two
Thermisters (Lamp & Cooltip) monitor the water temperature and must be within 4˚C of
each other. Lamp Water flow is >1.9 LPM. The Pressure switch is rated at 65 PSI and
will open if the pressure rises above this point.

Chapter 2 P/N 5500-0000 rev X1 2-5

Technical Service Manual StarLux500

CoolTip Cooling: A TEC module provides the cooltip cooling. Cooltip Water flow is
>0.45 LPM. The Pressure switch is rated at 65 PSI with a bypass circuit to prevent damage
if water flow is blocked. The “hourglass” may be displayed above the thermometer symbol
on the left side of the display screen. During this mode, the cooltip temperature is being
monitored while the TEC module is cooling the water and the hourglass symbol will stay
on until the water temperature is 15˚C (59˚F). This should occur within 7 minutes. If the
room temperature is above 22˚C (72˚F) or the system has been operating for a long period
of time and then shut off, it may take longer for the cooltip temperature to reach 15˚C. The
system will not go into the “Ready” mode until the hourglass is gone from the screen.
(screen 5) The Starlux must be in Ready mode in order for a handpiece to pulse.

Screen 5 (Ready Mode)

2.3.2.5 From the “Ready” screen, the user can select pulse width (ms), fluence (J/cm2), and
repetition rate (Hz) up to the maximum parameters for the handpiece. For questions about
handpiece or system information (ie. hp shot count or system software version), select the
question mark button and choose Handpiece or System. (screen 6 and 7) Select ‘Back’
button to return to your previous screen or to exit back to the Ready screen.

Screen 6 Screen 7 (System Information)

2.3.2.6 For complete system operation please see Chapter 4 of StarLux500 Operator’s Manual.

4.6 System Configuration Utility

4.6.1 Replacing the Display Module
When replacing the Display on a Starlux500, the system information must be
configured on the Compact Flash Software card from the Palomar factory. Re-
installing the original software card will not work on the new display and you will get a
001-110 error. Therefore you MUST provide the serial number of the Starlux500 before
ordering and receiving a new software card with the new Display. The system
information along with a Software Key will then be loaded and shipped with the new
Display prior to your installation on the system. This Software Key (Password) can
also be emailed. If you have any questions regarding this procedure, please contact or
email Palomar Customer Service.
