REPORT OF THE VISITS

Day 1: University of Science and Technology Meghalaya (Faculty of Social Sciences Department
of Social Work)

Time: 3:00 PM

Date: 05/09/2022

Aim: To know and understand the department of Social Work in The University of Science and
Technology Meghalaya

Objectives:

 to interact with the students at the university and share experiences in the field of social
work
 to know more about the different cultures in Assam
This was the first visit of the tour and it was to the University Science and Technology Meghalaya.
The university was established in 2011 and it is a private university located at Ri-Bhoi, in the state
of Meghalaya. The location of the university is situated on top of a hill which has very beautiful
scenery. The university has more than thirty courses in the faculty of Arts, Humanities, and Social
Sciences which gives a very broad spectrum on the courses individuals can choose from.

A total of twenty-seven students and two faculty members from Parul institute of social work went
to the above-mentioned university for their annual study tour with the aim of educational and
information exchange between the two departments of the universities. Upon reaching the
university we were welcomed by the students and the faculty member of the department of social
work of the university. The students at the university took the students from Parul university on a
tour of the classes and after that then there was a presentation by the faculty on the faculty and the
activities that the university does.

Dr Manoj took the initiative to introduce the faculty members after that a presentation was given.
One key observation in the teaching staff it is very diverse in a sense that it comprises a teacher
from almost every state in India.

17
Study Tour Report September 2022

Study tour is all about interaction and learning through experiences of others, to fulfil this the Dr
Manoj gave the students from Parul University a chance to interact with the students from the
hosting university. Below are some points to note about the interaction made.

 Peer interaction yields more information and encourages more openness between students
as they share experience and more on career choices after university.
 Importance of communication in every aspect of education and social life as, indicated by
some students they were not able to say anything until they felt comfortable among their
peers.
 In the discussion there was the issue of tribal communities being that was been discussed
and students from USTM gave their insight on the importance of preserving these tribal
communities since their community they come from is a tribal community and is under
preservation by the locals as well.
 Challenges faced during field work, as noted in the peer interaction there seems to be a
similarity in challenges being faced by students of USTM and those from Parul University.
 Culture exchange and language barriers as USTM students do not speak Hindi and are
familiar with English and Assamise language
Observations

 Due to the delay in arrival, we reached the university late and did not have a chance to
interact with more students as they had left for their homes.
 The general atmosphere and environment is very different from that of Gujarat and the
way of life is different from that in Vadodara.
 The university campus is very clean and beautiful. It is organized, despite it still being
under construction.
 They provide specialization in their course beginning second year and students have a
chance to choose according to their career lines.

18
Study Tour Report September 2022

Learnings

 Matrilineal society is also present in some communities in Assam, and it is similar to that
culture in Malawi and in this case the youngest daughter inherits everything so as to take
care of the parents in their old age.
 Learned more regarding the village pattern of the North-Eastern parts of India.
 Preservation of cultures of tribes in the area.
 The functioning of the department and the university natural museum which has different
animal species and little history about their habitat.

Day 2: Gujarati Bhawan, Guwahati, Assam

Time: 4:00 PM

Date: 06/09/22

Aim: To visit the Gujarati Bhawan and understand it’s work and functioning.

Objectives

 To know about the kind of work that goes on in a remote place like Assam, and what
influential factors is it based on.
 To understand the cultural reach of Gujarat in a place like Assam and what methods and
ways of living has been implemented in Assam, from a culturally and economically rich
state like Gujarat.

PROCESS

The students reached at the agency at around 4:00 pm. There they met the president of the
organization. He spoke to them regarding the agency, the work they do and the purpose of the
organization, etc. The faculty in charges and the students also interacted well with the president,
and it ended up being a very insightful and an interactive session. We were also given refreshments
by the end of the session along with a nice cup of tea.

Gujarat bhawan is an institution found in Guwahati and specializes in offering temporary shelter
to those who would have migrated to the north-east region and are still trying to look for a place
to stay as they settle down. It is a good initiative taken by the organization’s owner to help those
who need temporary shelter.

The visit to the organization was of great importance to the students as it was a learning moment
in that whenever people migrate to different places their mental health and financial stability might
not be well and need help from different people. Having such organizations in differences which

21
Study Tour Report September 2022

offer assistance to new people in the area can be of great help. Also, to note by having familiar
places around soon after migrating can be a great deal to those involved in the process of relocating.

Observation

 The society, even after being so old, lacked basic resources and facilities. We were told
that the entire budget laid down for the organization was about one crore, but no means of
development or implementation of plans for the agency was seen.
 No sort of welfare activities were observed.
Learning

 The students learnt the importance of Voluntary organization and their working.
 The students also learnt the importance of unity in a community and how sometimes it’s
beneficial to be in a closely-knit environment.

22

Day 3: Mother Old age Home and bhabadadevi memorial home.

Time: 12:30 pm.
Date: 07/9/22
Aim: To understand the structure and functioning of the old age home.
Objectives:

 To interact with senior citizens to know their experiences and their stories.
 To have knowledge about the functioning and funding of the old age home.
The students reached at ‘mother old age home’ at 12:30 pm. The students were firstly
accommodated in the hall. There they were greeted by the Co-founder of the agency. He gave brief
regarding the agency, how it was initiated, what services do they provide, their achievements and
their purpose; he also talked about the process at admitting an elderly into the old age home. There
were around 55 elderlies residing into the institution, out of which 46 were women and 7 were
men. Most of the people were destitute, who had no one. Only few of them had families. They also
talked about their funding pattern and how lack of funds works as an issue for the organization.
The institution was working on voluntarily fund only. After that he also shared life stories of some
elderly. Then the professors who were accompanying the students addressed the elderly and the
guy who was accompanying the students addressed the elderly. Then, there was a little recreational
activity in which the elderly sang and danced. Then, the students interacted with the elderly. After
that around 2:30 pm the students left ‘Mother old age home’.

The students reached ‘Bhabadadevi Memorial Philanthropic Trust’ at around 4:15 pm. It was an
old age working for the destitute women who had no one after them. The institution was
established in 2005 by Captain ‘Atul baurah’ by the name of his mother. The institution
accommodated 28 ladies. Most of them were handed over by the police and Ngo. The institution
works entirely on donations by the founder himself, his son, and other donors. The elderly even
worked on creating artefacts and handicrafts products. The money that they would even earn under
this would be utilized for their won benefits. After that student had a little bit of recreational
activities with the elderly and after looking at property the students left the agency.

23
Study Tour Report September 2022

OBSERVATIONS

 Most of the elderly in both institutions were females.

 Both the organization worked efficiently and are recognized by the society.
 The agencies only looked after destitute women.
Learnings

 Learning the traditional dance bihu community.

 Management of the funding for old age home.
 Learn to treat mentally retarded senior citizen without discriminating them with the stable
senior citizens.

Community engagement organized by Mahatma Gandhi National Council for Rural Education.
The program was for Professors and faculty members from various institutions and universities in
the north-Eastern states. The event was very prestigious with many dignitaries present including
the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Prabha Shankar Shukla and others. The program went on and everyone
shared their perspectives on importance of Rural the Development.in one of the presentations made
the speaker was very invested in the way social workers and those in the development sector have
plans for community development but, forget community engagement in the process of
development which is very disturbing and slowing the progress of development as most key
stakeholders forget the main beneficiaries of these rural development plans.

The program was an eye open as students who wish to enter into the development sector where
given the necessary information which makes it easy to understand the needs of the both the
community and the community developers. In presentation by one of the keynote speakers at the
33

function he posed a question which was “… are we aware of the needs of the community for it
develop or we are focused on delivering our plans to the community without engaging the
community?” this question alone raises a lot of concerns for the policy makers, community
developers and the community leader. It also, makes those interested in the development sector
and social workers working in the communities have more to look at in the line of community
engagement.

The program went on till 12:30. Students were even provided with refreshment and then the
Session ended.

Impulse NGO

The students reached the agency by around 4:30 pm. They firstly ware greeted by the Director,
Rosanna. She gave brief regarding how the NGO functions, the Listing of the agency and etc. The
agency was started in 1997 and presently they are working on issue of Human Trafficking, by
tracking the victim, finding them, counsel them and rehabilitate. It is the first Organization in
northeast working for Human Trafficking. It also has a profitable organization ISE, which was
started in 2008 to provide economic assistance to the vulnerable females of the society.

Then they talked about their Software which is used for tracking girls. Till date they have saved
around 74000 people. In the discussion with director she was keen to say that even with software
developed for tracking those who have been trafficked not everyone has the equal opportunity to
be found and rescued. She also, said that among the survivors of human trafficking they live with
Post traumatic stress disorder because of what they would have experienced. Most of those who
are trafficked they are sold into modern day slavery and mostly work as prostitutes and doing
unbelievable things. Children are also trafficked and these they can either grown to be child
soldiers or pick-pocketers.

Human trafficking is one of the greatest crimes that is being committed in violation to the human
rights. In short we can say that it is a pandemic perpetuated by poverty. Having such organization

in the community is of great importance because it helps people become aware of the dangers and
who is at risk of being human trafficked.

They even gave a Souvenir to the students. After that they showed a few video clips to the students
regarding the NGO stories of individual and etc. and the visit ended.

Observations:

1) The University is huge and consist of various programs and courses.

2) Visiting the Impulse NGO was a new experience for the students have never witnessed any
agency working with survivors of human trafficking and also ways to end human trafficking.

3) Poverty can be a reason for someone's vulnerability to such an extent one becomes unaware of
what is happening to them which is good or harmful to their well-being.

Learnings:

1) Learned that extreme poverty, lack of access to education, job opportunities and mass
displacement are all factors that push individuals into situations of human trafficking.

2) How to prevent human trafficking.

3) There are less or no job opportunities in northeast.

Conference Report for Study Tour

The students of Faculty of Social Work, during their study tour, had to go through a conference
every day to reflect on the work they did, to discuss their learnings, to alter their behaviors and to
improve their mistakes, which they possibly could have made during the study tour. The
conferences were conducted at the end of the day by the faculty coordinators, where the faculties
gave students the inputs and feedbacks that the students had to keep in mind, and implement,
during the next coming days of the study tour.

Conferences gave students an idea of what changes were to be made and what aspects were to be
avoided so that everyone could be in harmony! That was the only time during the study tour, where
everyone would be in the same room, and would discuss the happenings of the day! This got us all
closer as a group, as we were all going to be together as a whole class, with our teachers, and that
was going to enable our growth, not just as students but also as individuals and human beings!
This was another huge part of our learning, because these discussions opened our minds a lot, to
greater possibilities and scopes for improvement. We really want to thank our teacher coordinators,
Prof. Neha Dubey and Dr. Dipak Makwana, whose constant guidance, support, and honesty
towards us, helped us understand ourselves better and enhanced our skills as an individual as well.
When we go about things in a group, it is extremely important to make sure that everyone’s
viewpoints are respected and considered, and nobody lacks behind. It is important to stay kind
throughout that process and it is also important to remain calm and adjust according to our
surroundings! This is what conferences taught us and we will be forever grateful for those! Apart
from the memorable trip, this little memory of all of us being there for each other will never be
forgotten, as it adds to the beauty of all the highs and lows, and ups and downs of our trip. This is
the greatest learning that we will carry with us for all our lives.

Now only the waterfalls remain, which is very popular among tourists. In the local Khasi
