COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course is designed to enhance your writing skills and critical thinking abilities. It delves into the art of crafting precise summaries and insightful analyses, essential skills for success in academic and professional
settings.

COURSE AIM
Upon completion of this academic writing course, students will be proficient in crafting succinct and precise summaries of complex texts, demonstrating the ability to distill key ideas and information. Furthermore,
students will exhibit advanced analytical skills, effectively evaluating and interpreting diverse sources. They will develop the capacity to construct well-supported arguments through evidence-based analysis,
showcasing a deep understanding of rhetorical strategies. Additionally, students will refine their critical reading skills, enabling them to engage with academic texts thoughtfully and articulate nuanced perspectives in
their written analyses. The course will empower students to apply these skills across various disciplines and academic contexts, fostering their capability to produce high-quality summaries and analyses that adhere to
academic standards.

TEACHING METHOD
Teacher’s presentation, interactive technique, discussions, observation, reflection and practice techniques are used.

By the end of the course, the student will be able to,

The student;

1.1 demonstrates the ability to accurately cite academic sources using the APA style, including proper formatting for in-text citations and reference lists. identifies the role and the
importance of structure teaching for ELT.
1.2 gains proficiency in formatting research papers, theses, and other academic documents according to APA guidelines, showcasing their competence in presenting research in a clear and
organized manner. defines the rationale for applying deductive or inductive way to structure presentation.

analyze different resources for effective and ethical academic research.
The student;
2.1 develops information literacy skills, enabling them to effectively locate, evaluate, and use a diverse range of academic resources for research purposes.
2.2 demonstrates proficiency in navigating academic databases, utilizing advanced search techniques, filters, and Boolean operators to retrieve pertinent scholarly articles, books, and other
relevant materials.

The student;

3.2 paraphrases effectively as a strategy to avoid plagiarism, demonstrating an awareness of ethical considerations in academic writing.

The student;
4.1 demonstrates a clear understanding of the concept of summary.
4.2 identifies and extracts key information from a variety of texts, including articles, research papers, and other academic sources.
4.3 condenses complex ideas into clear and concise summaries, effectively communicating the main points of a text.
4.4 enhances their critical thinking skills, discerning between essential and non-essential information while summarizing, and evaluating the significance of key concepts.

The student;
5.1 analyzes the structure of research articles, including the introduction, literature review, methodology, results, discussion, and conclusion, and recognize the purpose and content of each
section.
5.2 critically evaluates the abstract of a research article, summarizing the main objectives, methods, results, and conclusions, and determining its relevance to their research interests.

5.3 analyzes the discussion section, identifying how authors interpret their results, relates findings to existing literature, and discusses the implications and limitations of the study.

evaluate the literature reviews of academic research articles.

The student;
6.1 analyzes the key components of a literature review, including the introduction, thematic organization, critical analysis, and conclusion.
6.2 evaluates research questions that guide the scope and purpose of their literature reviews.
6.3 identifies relevant sources and critically evaluating their credibility and relevance to the research topic.
6.4 develops critical evaluation skills, enabling them to assess the strengths and weaknesses of literature reviews, identifying gaps, contradictions, and areas for improvement.
6.5 conducts comparative analyses of multiple literature reviews, recognizing different approaches, methodologies, and contributions within a given research area.
COURSE REQUIREMENTS

The students are required to attend to classes regularly, and to participate in discussions, and to demonstrate and to reflect on their learning \teaching process.
EVALUATION
Midterm 40%
Final 60%

Mid-term (40%)
Students will be evaluated based on their proficiency in summarizing & analyzing information. Each student is tasked with selecting a topic of personal interest, reading three relevant research articles, and crafting a
comprehensive summary & analysis paper.
The details will be provided in due course.

Final (60 %)
Students will be assessed based on their analysis of a literature review related to the topic they have individually chosen for the midterm. Each student is required to delve into a minimum of 10 research articles of
personal interest to construct a comprehensive and insightful literature review.
The details will be provided in due course.

LIST OF REQUIRED READINGS


● The required reading materials will be available on Mergen.

IMPORTANT NOTE:
For the midterm assignment, each student will choose a topic related to ELT and will read at least three research articles on the chosen topic. Each student will write a coherent and elaborate summary & analysis
paper. Students will get feedback on their work.
For the final exam, each student will read at least ten more research articles and will prepare a comprehensive and insightful literature review. There will be no re-sit exam for this class.
