ACCOUNTING STANDARD 17
SEGMENT REPORTING
1. Segment:
Business Segment: A business segment is a component of an enterprise
• that is engaged in providing an individual product or services and
• that is subject to risks and returns that are different from other
business segments.
Factors that should be considered in identifying business segments include:
(a) the nature of the products or services;
(b) the nature of the production processes;
(c) the type or class of customers for the products or services;
(d) the methods used to distribute the products or provide the services;
(e) the nature of the regulatory environment
Geographical Segment: A geographical segment is a component of an
enterprise
• that is operating within a particular economic environment and
• that is subject to risks and returns that are different from components
operating in other economic environments.
Factors that should be considered in identifying geographical segments include:
(a) Area of operations
(b) Political boundaries
(c) the currency risks.

2. Reportable Segments
A reportable segment is a business segment or a geographical segment for
which segment information is required to be disclosed by this Statement.
Reportable segments are classified in the following two parts for the purpose
of disclosures
a) Primary Reportable Segments
b) Secondary Reportable Segments

3. Identification of Primary Segments:


The dominant source and nature of risks and returns of an enterprise should
govern whether its primary segment reporting format will be business
segments or geographical segments.

4. Identification of Reportable Segments:


To identify a business segment or geographic segment as reportable segment
following criteria should be used:
Criteria 1: Quantitative thresholds: An entity shall report separately
information about each segment that that meets any of the following
quantitative thresholds:
Based on segment revenue: Segment Revenue is 10% (or) more of total
Segment Revenue

Based on segment result: Segment result is 10% (or) more of


• Combined result of all segments in terms of profit
• Combined result of all segments in terms of loss
Whichever is greater in absolute amounts

Based on segment asset: Segment Assets is 10% (or) more of total segment
assets

Attention:
a) Segment revenue is the aggregate of External Sale and Inter segment
sales
b) Segment result is segment revenue less segment expense.
c) Segment Assets are non-current assets and current assets of the
segments.
d) Segment Revenue, Expense, Assets and Liabilities does not include:
• Extraordinary items as defined in AS 5
• Investment related Items
• Tax Related Items
• Head-office related Items expenses, and other items that relate to
the enterprise as a whole.

Criteria 2: Management discretion:


Segments that do not meet any one of the QT may be considered reportable
at the discretion of management

Criteria 3: Previous FY Reportable segments:


Any Segments which was reportable during preceding financial year as it
meets QT, should be reportable during financial year even if it no longer
meets QT criteria.

Criteria 4: Entity’s Revenue criteria:


If total external revenue reported by Segments constitute less than 75% of
entity’s revenue, than additional Segments shall be Identified as Reportable
segment until at least 75% of entity’s revenue is Included in reportable
segment.
Note: Information about other segments that are not reportable shall be
combined and disclosed in an ‘all other segments’ category separately from
other reconciling items in the reconciliations required by AS 17.
