RESEARCH PLAN

A. Problem

Styrofoam is one of the most common garbage that we can find elsewhere. This
garbage is often thrown away without thinking that it can harm the environment, not only
does styrofoam cause damage to the environment, but it can also damage ocean
especially the marine species. Moreover, human waste a plethora of materials in our
daily lives that we don’t realize could be used for something else, such as banana stem
pseudo stem thrown away every day. Millions of tons of these are currently dumped in
our country as waste, and the majority of farmers are having a very difficult time getting
rid of the accumulated banana pseudostem. So, the researchers thought of doing
something they could do to help the environment. The researchers will make an
alternative food packaging made from banana stem fiber.

B. Hypothesis
1. There is no significant difference between the effectiveness of setup 1 and setup 2 of
food packaging made from banana stem fiber in terms of durability, quality, weight
capacity, and sustainability.
2. There is no significant difference between the acceptability of setup 1 and setup 2 of
food packaging made from banana stem fiber in terms of odor, texture, color, thickness,
and appearance.

C. Research Question
1. What is the effectiveness of the food packaging made from banana stem in terms of;
1.1 Durability
1.2 Quality
1.3 Weight Capacity
1.4 Sustainability
2. What is the acceptability of banana stem in making food packaging in terms of;
2.1 Odor
2.2 Texture
2.3 Color
2.4 Thickness
2.5 Appearance
3. Is there a significant difference between the effectiveness of setup 1 and setup 2 of
food packaging in terms of durability, quality, weight capacity, and sustainability?
4. Is there a significant difference between the acceptability of setup 1 and setup 2 of
food packaging in terms of odor, texture, color, thickness, and appearance?

D. Materials

 Banana Stem
 Water
 Big pot
 Sodium Hydroxide
 Strainer
 Plastic tub
 Blender
 Frame strainer
 Knife

E. Procedure
1. Gathering of materials
2. Preparing the workplace
3. Cut the banana stem into small pieces.
4. Wash the cutted pieces of banana stem.
5. Boil the cutted pieces of the banana stem for about 15 minutes.
6. Add 20 ml of sodium hydroxide while boiling.
7. After boiling 15 minutes, strain it to separate the water.
8. Blend it to make the banana stem finer.
9. Put it to the container filled with water, use frame strainer to separate the fiber on water.
10. Let it dry for 24 hours.
11. When dry, sew the banana stem fiber.
12. Apply different test.

F. Data Analysis
The data were recorded, tallied, tabulated. After tabulation, the data were analyzed using
statistical treatment using frequency and percentage. The frequency and percentage score will
identify the level of acceptability of banana stem fiber as food packaging in terms of
sustainability, Quality, durability, appearance, color , texture, thickness with the help of
statistician.
