The BA International Relations degree provides a uniquely global and comparative approach to the study of world affairs. Through a study of world history
and global power relations, students gain a better understanding of the sources of conflict and cooperation among states, shifts in the international
economy, as well as the roles of culture, identity and ideas in world politics. It is structured around a combination of disciplinary, regional and specialised

theoretical and applied knowledge of International Relations as a discipline, and of China as a global power, with linguistic proficiency in Mandarin and
competence in navigating Chinese and international settings relevant to diplomacy, international organisations and corporations. It will offer you a
foundational theoretical underpinning in the discipline of International Relations, as well as the opportunity to specialise in particular thematic and
regional areas of IR research, with an emphasis on China as a globally active state. **There is no Mandarin pre-requisite as the programme is designed for

linguists ready to enter graduate employment. This course will enable you to achieve a good or high level of linguistic competence in Chinese in all four
skill areas (reading, writing, listening and speaking), and a critical understanding of culture and politics from the perspective of the changing dynamics of
the global political order. You'll have the opportunity to study language, culture and international relations in an integrated way, exploring the connections
between them and the broader geopolitical and cross-cultural contexts in which they are produced.

The University of Portsmouth is spread across two campuses, one in the
city centre and another overlooking a wildlife reserve! The seaside locations
provide excellent bases for water sports and the Student Union provides a
number of thriving watery clubs such as sailing, rowing, water-skiing and
canoeing. Many pubs around the Portsmouth area host live music events,
and overall the local scene is more pubby than clubby. The Wedgewood
Rooms host gigs as well comedy nights. Academically, Portsmouth
University sits outside the top 50 in the UK rankings but tends to score
highly in specific subjects such as languages, health studies and sports
science.
