CHAPTER 1
The Problem and Its Background

I. Introduction

The Transition to Senior High School (SHS) Marks A Pivotal Stage

in The Education Journey of Students, Encompassing Critical Changes in
Academic, Social, And Personal Domains. As Students Enter This Phase,
They Encounter A "Myriad of Challenges That Can Significantly Influence
Their Overall Well-Being and Academic Performance. These Challenges
Can Range from Academic Pressures, Social Adjustment. Financial
Constraints, And Psychological Stressors, Among Others Understanding
the Spectrum of Challenge and The Coping Mechanisms Adopted by SHS
Student Is Imperative to Devise Effective Strategies That Promote Their
Resilience, Mental Health, And Academic Success.
The challenges experienced by SHS of Buenavista National High
School students can vary widely and may include academic, social,
emotional, and financial difficulties. These challenges can affect students'
overall educational experience and future prospects. To address these
challenges effectively, it is crucial to identify and analyze them
comprehensively. Furthermore, exploring the coping mechanisms
employed by SHS students can provide insights into how they manage and
overcome these challenges, contributing to their resilience and success.
This Research Paper endeavors to investigate and comprehensively
analyze the challenges faced by SHS students. Elucidating their nature
frequently and impact, additionally it seeks to delve into the coping
mechanism employed by students to navigate these challenges and
maintain a balanced academic and personal life by exploring interplay of
challenge in coping strategies, this paper aims to shed light on the
resilience and adaptability of SHS students and provide valuable insights
for educator, parents and policymakers.

Conceptual Model of the Study

This study utilizes the Independent Variable (IV) and Dependent

Variable (DV) model. The Independent Variable is consisted of Challenges
Encountered. The acts as the potential predictors of the outcome under
Dependent Variable.

The Dependent Variable is consisting of Senior High School

Students. This outcome variable is dependent on the effects of challenges
they encountered among the Respondents. A possible relationship of the
Independent Variable (IV) and Dependent Variable (DV) is explored.
II. Review Of Related Literature and Studies

1.1. CHALLENGES
We are complex beings living complex lives in which we are not always
able to cope up with the difficulties that we face. As a result, we are subject
to feelings of tension and stress. Anspaugh, Hamrick, and Rosato (2003)
shared the view that stress came in several forms and affected people of all
ages and walks of life.

This implies that stress is a part of life and has many causes, and that
the degree of stress in our lives is greatly dependent on factors such as the
physical health of the individual, the quality of interpersonal relationships,
the number of commitments and responsibilities we shoulder, the degree of
others' dependence on and expectations of us, the amount of support we
receive from others, and the number of changes of traumatic events we go
through. This means that life itself is stress related, depending on the
individual's lifestyle and the level of cultural development.

College students are not exempted to this scenario. Oftentimes, most

students struggle in their academic preparation. College is a stressful time
for many students as they go through the process of adapting to new
educational and social environments. However, it is believed that certain
factors may allow some students to succeed academically, such as stress
coping skills. Coping skills are factors that determine how a person
responds to a task and how well they succeed (Pajares, 2002). When an
individual has a sense of control over the stressful situation, they are more
likely to respond to the situation with confidence (Aspinwall & Taylor, 1992).

1.2. COPING MECHANISM

Coping strategies are ways of handling stressful and troublesome
circumstances, and students need to develop coping strategies to manage
encountered stress. Coping is described as the thoughts and activities
used to deal with stressful events in internal and external aspects. It is a
phrase that distinguishes conscious and deliberate act mobilization from
'defense mechanisms,' which are subconscious or unconscious adaptive
reactions aimed at reducing or tolerating stress (Algorani & Gupta, 2021). If
students are not able to manage stress, the stressors coming from different
kinds of problems can affect the ability of students to perform (Rogers &
Yassin, 2003 cited by Guevarra & Cimanes, 2017). This COVID-19
pandemic has hugely affected students, not just on their mental well-being
but also the quality of learning they are receiving. In order to succeed in
distant learning in the midst of the current crisis, students use a variety of
coping mechanisms (Rotas & Cahapay, 2020). The endorsement of social
connection by students during this pandemic, predicted important well-
being outcomes like developing new habits, maintaining social
relationships, and attempting new activities to compensate for an absence
of rigidity (Logel et al., 2021). Strategies were used to cope with the
problems they’re facing and according to Barrot (2021), the strategies that
was frequently used were resource management and utilization, help-
seeking, time management, technical aptitude enhancement, and learning
environment control which helped students cope with the challenges they
experience on their learning environment at home and technological
literacy and competency. According to Lucky (2015), in tough and stressful
circumstances, the coping mechanisms that the students perform are
reading (novels, inspirational books, and news bulletins), viewing movies
and documentaries, playing (sports, music, instruments, and computer
games), using social media (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc.), and
practicing religion and spirituality. Students that experience distance
learning challenges, cope by active coping, positive reframing, emotional
and instrumental support, self-distraction, religion venting, denial, and
acceptance (Kwaah, 2017). Overall, students that experience difficulties
cope by engaging in various and different coping mechanisms to relieve the
complexities of reality.

III. Definition of Terms

The following terminologies used in this study;

Challenges- something new and difficult which requires great effort and
determination.
Coping mechanism- is to deal with and overcome struggles and
difficulties in life. It is a way for us to maintain our mental and emotional
well-being.
Encountered- unexpectedly experience or be faced with (something
difficult or hostile).
Students- a person formally engaged in learning, especially one
enrolled in a school or college.
Effect- a change which is a result or consequence of an action or other
cause.
