Course Description:

This Course is designed for self-study; this course will help you to understand, the use, and
applying a range of Information Communications Technologies (ICTs)—such as computers and
the Internet, other audio and video equipment, mobile phones, and online resources and tools—
as part of the teaching and learning process. During this course, you will collaborate with your
peers to develop a learning activity that uses digital tools and resource as your guide to become a
centered learning. It provides students with the knowledge and skills in various hardware,
software, and networking. Students will learn about computer troubleshooting, manage computer
networks, and use computer applications used onboard ships.

LESSON 1. IMPORTANCE OF COMPUTER

Learning Activities:

Today the computer is the most inevitable part of our life. Almost all works of us related to
technological development involve computers so it became the basic requirement for our
development though different people have different developmental goals, and also know that
the computer is the foundation that is required for the development.
As the 21st century looms ahead, it is clear to see that it has advancements that humanity may
never have dreamed of and one of these shining developments is the well-recognized computer.
Having the Latin meaning of ‘computing’ or ‘reckoning’ the computer is an invention that was
called the ‘MAN OF THE YEAR’. The computer system is not a machine. It is like a very
modern and highly complex calculator. It can do all the functions at a speedy rate and also help
us to search and progress in our homes and business. A computer can therefore be called a
calculator with a twist for not only does it perform fast calculations, but it also has other special
characteristics. The computer has thoroughly changed the way we witness things, with its
special auto correcting tools, which work with all languages, all logic and all subjects.
In our day to day lives, computers have been allotted an integral role to play, they can be seen
being used not only at the office or at home but in all kinds of sectors and businesses. They are
used at airports, restaurants, railways stations, banks etc. slowly and gradually. As computers are
penetrating through the modern society, people are getting more and more optimistic about the
promises its invention made.

Computer

It is an electronic device capable of accepting data and process this data to produce a useful and
meaningful information. Computers rely on a binary system that uses two variables, 0 and 1, to
complete tasks such as storing data, calculating algorithms and displaying information.

Data

Is a collection of unorganized facts & figures and does not provide any further information
regarding patterns, context, etc. Hence data means “unstructured facts and figures”.

Information

Is a structured data i.e. organized meaningful and processed data. To process the data and
convert information, a computer is used.

Importance of Computer

The computer is important in a variety of ways. A difficult and time-consuming task can be done
in no time and in easy way. The computer provides better and effective way to manage a large
amount of information to every individual, organization, business, government and institution.
The value of computer lies in the ability to perform quickly and accurately. The computer can
help producing better quality products, help in teaching and assist in elimination human error.

 Solving Numerical Problems

One of the most difficult and most important jobs performed by computer is the
solution of complicated problems involving numbers. Computers can solve those
problems amazingly and quickly. The computer can perform a simple numerical
problem to complicated numerical problem.

 Storing and Retrieving Information

People use computers to store large quantities of information. Information stored

on a computer is sometimes called a database. The database can be enormous. A
computer can search a huge database to find a specific piece of information. In
addition, the information can be changed easily and quickly. The efficiency with
which computer store and retrieve information makes them valuable in a wide
range of professions.

 Creating and Displaying Document and Picture

Computers can be store a huge number of word in a way that make it easy to
manipulate them. For this reason, word processing is one of the most important
and widespread uses of a computer. Computers are also important in the
publishing industries. (Most books and magazine are typed on a computer.
Graphics is the use of a computer to make pictures).

Receiving Input

Data is fed into computer through various input devices like keyboard, mouse, digital pens,
etc. Input can also be fed through devices like CD-ROM, pen drive, scanner, etc.

Processing the Information

Operations on the input data are carried out based on the instructions provided in the
programs.

Storing the Information

After processing, the information gets stored in the primary or secondary storage area.

Producing Output

The processed information and other details are communicated to the outside world
through output devices like monitor, printer, etc.

Importance of Computer Technology in Everyday Life

Computer technology is used to serve and connect people in the modern world. Desktops,
laptops and mobile devices network the world together and perform multiple operations at once;
however, this industry includes more than these machines. Individuals, communities,
government and organizations rely on computer technology to produce or innovate the majority
of things in their lives, such as food, services, entertainment, care, communication, education and
transportation.

The use of computers on a regular basis in our life is very important. Technically in daily life
computer is used to convert raw facts and data into meaningful information and knowledge.
Computer science is explored and challenged by humans daily. The computer is like an
electronic magical device for our life.

Computer technology controls satellites and traffic signals. MP3 players and cellular phones rely
on it. When people drive, they depend on a computer to keep their vehicle's engine running
properly. Governments use it to streamline services and enhance defense. Even basic television
broadcasting now depends on complex computer management to keep things moving. Computer
technology permeates the fabric of contemporary life at home, at work and even at play.

Food

Farmers use innovations in computer technology to determine the best time to plant, fertilize,
harvest and sell crops. The Internet offers weather and stock market reports in real-time, and its
global network of potential buyers is more expansive than local merchants. New machinery, such
as cow milking machines, uses basic computer programming routines to automate the care of
animals and crops. Harvesting vehicles give drivers more information when gathering crops, and
farmers can detect if plants are contaminated with fungal toxins. As farmers become aware of
new farming technology, they can adapt their future farming methods.

Services

The importance of computer technology in the services industry is increasing. Computer

technology includes any machines that receive commands and perform calculations or services
accordingly. Many types of operations, such as billing, record keeping, transactions and
planning, take place through commercially available or customized machines. Most modern
devices use microchips and processing units to perform their basic functions. ATM machines,
gas station pumps, GPS units and barcode scanners may be common in everyday life; however,
each relies on circuit boards and digital data to meet the needs of consumers.

Entertainment

Major motion pictures and television programs use some form of visual, audio and animation
effects in their production. Video games employ graphics produced by a computer, and each
game plugs into a computer-based home entertainment system. Players can play by themselves
or with others over the Internet. Some game systems can sell downloadable programs and stream
movies online.

Communication

Computer technology provides a number of benefits in terms of fast communication. Instant

messaging systems allow users to exchange information in real time without necessitating a call
or physically moving to another location. Video conferencing systems enable users to see each
other in real-time, regardless of their locations. Email programs provide the opportunity to send
personal or professional messages, even legal documents, in a fraction of the time traditional
postal services provide.

students digitally and creatively with data visualization. Uses of the computer in a classroom will

Video lectures, and PowerPoint presentations, etc. are very beneficial for students to learn more
deeply and accurately. That created the new education business model called small classes, smart

The move from manually run systems to computerized automation and calculations moves
farther along every day. One aspect of life that computers are used for in abundance is travel and
transportation. Those traveling by air rely on a long list of computer systems to get them from
point A to point B. But even if you are using land transportation, it is very likely you'll encounter
one or more computer systems during your journey.

GPS systems passively receive satellite signals that inform drivers of their location or how to
find a specific destination. The device calculates the information and creates a display that adapts
to movement, and it gives step-by-step directions on how to navigate the most-direct path
available. Drivers can travel more confidently knowing that they can typically get where they
need to go if service is available

 Car Navigation

One common computer used in land transportation today is the Global Positioning
System, or GPS. This form of car navigation is used for everyday travel for many people.
These navigation computers are typically mounted on the dashboard of a car and feature a
screen that shows a map that tracks your vehicle's movement via satellite signals. These
extremely accurate devices can pinpoint your location to within 100 feet. Some cellular
phones even have the technology built in. The navigation system will talk to the driver to
let him know when to prepare to make turns, how far it is until the next required turn, and
can estimate to the minute when the vehicle will arrive at the preferred destination.

 Positive Train Control

Referred to PTC, is the computer system that tracks the movement of trains on various
railways around the country. PTC technology is capable of preventing train-to-train
collisions, derailments caused by excessive speed and the associated deaths or injuries.

Families planning road trips or truckers looking for an alternative route to a destination
often use their home computers, laptops or even smart phones to better understand the lay
of the land. Driving directions and corresponding maps are available from websites like
Yahoo!, Google and many others. A mapping program on each of the websites enables
travelers to input a current location and any destination address, and get detailed turn-by-
turn directions that will take the driver right to the door of where they want to go. The
computer will allow you to see a visual map, a list of verbal directions, the total mileage
down to 1/10 of a mile and the total driving time, including potential traffic slow-downs.
Some websites even offer updates on traffic jams and offer quicker alternatives.

Traveling by land by bus or train typically begins with online booking on the computer.
Companies have websites that let people plan trips using their services. You can enter the
date of departure and return and the destination, and the computer screen will display
ticket prices, itineraries and offer the option to book and pay for the trip right online with
a credit card.

Computer technology radically alters the process of travel. Savvy travelers no longer need a
travel agent to get to their destination of choice. Online services provide travelers the chance to
book tickets, compare prices and even to plan routes for travel by car, all of which reduce costs
in time and money.

Computer technology benefits business at every level. Computer technology allows for the
automation of numerous manufacturing processes. It provides real-time access to financial
markets across the globe. A variety of software packages exist that enable companies with
multiple warehouses to track total inventory, ordering and sales for the entire company, rather
than wait on weekly or monthly hard copy reports

The use of a computer with the internet is creating new ways to do product and services
marketing online. Digital marketing services, products, websites, and businesses are growing.
Businesses can use a computer to type marketing content, to publish content marketing articles
on websites and social media. They can sell and market their products on portals or such as
Amazon. Companies can chat, email, outsource, apply, and can do various works that included in
Internet Marketing such as website designing, Search engine optimization, Content Marketing,
Social Media Marketing, etc. all by the use of a computer to market their product and services in
best possible ways.

There is an entire sub-discipline in the field of information technology called "health

informatics" that focuses on integration of various computer technologies into the medical field.
For example, pharmacy informatics streamlines the electronic communication and fulfillment of
prescriptions, which reduces risk by cross-checking patient information against their records.

Banks are using computers daily to faster and accurate customer demands. Banks are using a
computer to deposit customer money in their account. In this case, the cashier enters the account
number of customers in their banking application, they first confirm the account number and
customer details and then enter the deposited amount in their banking application by the use of
the keyboard. This process is faster and accurate. Banks are also providing ATMs to withdraw
and cash deposit ATMs for their customers

The government works or official works take more time to complete in the past. There was lots
of staff required in the past to manage citizen’s works. But today citizens, consumers are getting
a solution with high speed and accuracy. Because of the use of computers in official works.
There are so many applications that speed the process and quality of official works.

There have been many changes to employment patterns. Increasingly, people work from home
(called 'tele-working'). They can organize their working life around their home life, which might
be important. A range of computer equipment now allows someone to do their job and stay in
contact with their employers. They might use a computer, a tablet, a printer, a webcam and
microphone, a broadband modem and Internet connection, a smartphone.

Socializing

We now socialize in ways we never used to. Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Dating Agencies, chat
rooms, forums and so on are all ways which we connect to other people. In the past, we used to
socialize with only those people we met whereas now, we can socialize with people from all over
the world.

Shopping

We can now shop for any product using the Internet 24 hours a day all year round. We can use
the Internet to find a wider choice of products from across the globe, and look up reviews before
we make a purchase and can compare prices easily to save money. We can get some products
such as music, books, films and games delivered to us instantly electronically.

Crime

With the increasing use of computers in our daily lives, it was inevitable that criminals would
also be harnessing the power of computers. Criminals have hacked into computer networks
belonging to large companies and stolen data, including credit card details. They have set up
false web sites with amazing deals to try and get people to enter in their credit card details to buy
something and have used 'phishing' techniques (sending out large numbers of emails) to try and
get people to give them their account details for their bank.

Uses of Computer in new habits-Impact of computer in our life

Our life is fully impacted by computers. Today the use of the computer with internet connection
in daily life changed our habits. We’re creating new kinds of habits, such as listening to music on
the computer, earning money online, doing internet banking, communicating online with friends
and family, running an online business, taking online classes, etc. are new kinds of habits. It’s a
good living practice by a human because many people are in favor of Technology without data
analysis.

The computer can impact our life negatively too if above-paragraphed habits turn into bad habits.
More use of a computer for daily life activities means less physical works and more mental work.
In this case, the accessibility of the brain is increased by so many features of computers and the
Internet. But the physical capacity is decreasing or not growing because of too much sitting all
day in front of the computer. It’s really important for us to make a balance between brain access
and body capacity, such a balanced use of the computer in daily life will be great.

using computers. For kids, they commonly use computers for games, drawings, and funny
movies. High school students can do research and advance studies, accomplish their assignments

Regardless of the type of computer you are using, this digital device is essential for our daily
living. Technology keeps on growing faster every day. Therefore, the services that we have also
integrate the presence of technology in their field. Computers changed our lives before we even
know it. When you look around, you can see different devices from a personal mobile cell phone
through various types of machinery that factories use to produce the necessities of society.
