THE ALIANZA REGIONAL PRESENTS A REPORT ABOUT ACCESS TO PUBLIC INFORMATION IN THE REGION IN A HEARING BEFORE THE INTER-AMERICAN

COMMISSION OF HUMAN
RIGHTS

The Alianza Regional por la Libre Expresin e Informacin got the first thematic hearing about access to public information before the Inter-American Commission of Human Rights. It will take place on October 24th at 9:00 am (Washington), during the 143rd Period of Session. The Delegation of the Alianza Regional will be composed by the following member organizations: Asociacin por los Derechos Civiles ADC (Argentina), Centro de Archivos y Acceso a la Informacin Cainfo (Uruguay), Fundacin para el Debido Proceso Legal DPLF (United States of America), Fundacin para la Libertad de Prensa FLIP (Colombia), Fundacin Pro Acceso (Chile), Fundacin Salvadorea para el Desarrollo Econmico y Social FUSADES (El Salvador), Fundacin Violeta Barrios de Chamorro FVBCH (Nicaragua), Fundamedios (Ecuador), Transparencia Venezuela (Venezuela), Trust for the Americas OEA (United States of America), and the Executive Secretariat of the Alianza. At this hearing, the Alianza Regional will present a report to the Commissioners to demonstrate the need of a permanent promotion, proper implementation and sustainable defense of access to public information, as well as expose important future challenges for the region regarding the subject. As for the promotion, we will argue the need to advance in the legislative process to promote the enactment of laws according to international standards. The focus on implementation, will show progress and setbacks in the fully exercise of access to information. Finally, the report will identify challenges in the exercise of this right that allow the access to other fundamental rights, as well as tensions related to the independence of guaranteeing bodies. The Alianza Regional hopes that this instance of dialogue can serves as a tool to raise awareness of the importance of this right and to generate lines of cooperation between local members and the Inter-American Human Rights System.
