‘STANDARD JOB PROCEDURE ie RER EE
TITLE : GOLD ANALYSIS ON BULLION (Fire Assay Method) errr
3.3 Weigh accurately into a calibrated weighing balance to the nearest
0.00001 gram 3 sets of 500-mg gold drillings for gold and silver
assay respectively in Heusser-Batance, sensitive to 0.0001 mg.
Record the weights. METTLER Fovene
3.3.1 Avoid any form of spillage during the process that would
lead to metal losses,
3.4 Pour the gold drilings sample directly from the scale pan into the
prepared 5 grams lead foil (1.2.2) rolled into the shape of a
‘cornucopia with the bottom pinched in.
3.5 Weigh the required silver for inquartation and silver foil for both
gold standard and bullion with 2 2.5:1.0 Ag : Au ratio.
3.8 Add 40-mg copper foil (1.2.4) for the gold standard and for the
gold sample and add the deficit copper to approximate that in
bullion.
3.7 Weigh the required silver and copper for the silver standard to
approximate that in the bullion.
3.7.1 No copper and silver should be added to the sample for
silver assay.
3.8 Wrap the weighed samples and standard proof with their
corresponding lead packets and press in spherical shape.
3.9 Arrange in the numbered compartments of wooden tray as
prepared.
4. Cupel the sample in the electric furnace. Refer to SJP-LAB-701 for
the operation of electric furnace.
4.1 Put the sample in a pre-heated cupel and put in the furnace at a
temperature of 1000°C foes minutes
4.2 Cover with an extra row of cupel at the furnace door opening so
that the temperature will be kept uniform,
4.3 Withdraw the cupels even while the bead are stil fluid. With the
ratio of 2:5:1 silver to gold, and with copper present, there is no
danger of sprouting.
4.4 Remove the beads from the cupel and carefully clean from all
adhering bone ash with nylon brush.
5. Weigh the sample for silver assays and standard dore proof assays
in a gold micro-balance and record the weights.
