KEY POINTS

A rowdy crowd broke through metal barricades and

lit dozens of flares at Federation Square during the
Matildas’ World Cup semi-final against England.

Federation Square reached capacity an hour before

the kick-off in Sydney, but crowds stormed the
barriers to join supporters inside the square.

Victoria Police expressed disappointment in the

crowd’s behaviour, singling out a large group of
“mainly male youths” and saying it was a
“challenging night”.

Women’s World Cup matches won’t be shown on

the big screen at Federation Square for the
remainder of the tournament after unruly fans
broke through barriers into the packed-out live
site during the Matildas match against England.

Melbourne’s main live site for the third-place

playoff on Saturday between Australia and
Sweden, and the final between Spain and
England on Sunday, will be at AAMI Park.
