Silent reading is a two-step process involving the recognition and interpretation of printed words. In
achieving most purposes, it is more efficient than oral reading. The need for silent reading increases as
children grow older and work independently in personal reading and study. Independence in reading
should be achieved as early as possible. A person who fails to develop the ability to read with ease and
understanding turns to other ways of gaining information, such as motion pictures, televisions, or other
people. The ability to read rapidly for meaning is an important factor in the rate of learning. It becomes
more important as demands for additional reading are made at each succeeding level of school and in

Palestine, a small, historic land at the eastern end of the Mediterranean Sea, is one of the world's most
historic places. Two great religions—Judaism and Christianity—originated in Palestine. It is the Holy
Land, the site of many events described in the Bible. Followers of Islam, the Muslim religion, also
consider Palestine a sacred place.
Palestine's location between Egypt and Southwest Asia has made it a center of conflict for thousands of
years. Many peoples have invaded the region. In the late 1940's, most of Palestine was divided between
Israel and Jordan. The part that Jordan took is usually called the West Bank. Israel calls it Jdea and
Samaria. A small piece of land called the Gaza Strip was taken by Egypt. As a result of this division, there
is no present day country called Palestine. Since 1967, Israel has occupied the West Bank and Gaza Strip.

No one knows how language began. Because all people who are not handicapped have the ability to
speak language, has probably existed at least as long as the modern human species. Most scholars
believe that language, developed very slowly from sounds, such as grunts, barks, and hoots made by
prehuman creatures. According to this view, a simple system of vocal communication became more and
more complex as the human brain and speech organs evolved. But no one knows when or how this
process took place. In fact, there is no record of language for most of its existence. The first real
evidence of language is writing. But scholars believe that writing did not appear until thousands of years
after the origin of spoken language. The earliest known written records are Sumerian cuneiform and
Egyptian hieroglyphics from about 3000 B.C. Written Chinese dates from perhaps 1500 B.C., Greek from
