TRANCRIBED BY: JEAN HERSHEY REYES

Connective Tissue Divisions of Connective Tissue

 Connective tissue is specialized to physically support and Connective Tissue Proper

connect other tissues and maintain the water required for
metabolite diffusion to and from cells.  Generic type of tissue and they don’t form distinct organs.
 Used as fillers or major attachments.
 Most abundant tissue in the body.  Classified according to the amount of collagen and ground
substance present.

attachment of one tissue Classification of Connective Tissue Proper

Blood o Transport of materials Mucoid (or Mucous) Connective Tissue
o Immune system
Fats; Bones o Storage of materials

Composition

 Unlike any other tissue types, the major constituents of

connective tissues are the (ECM) Extracellular Matrix

o Large protein fibers

o Non-fibrous areas of unstained ground substance rich in
various GAGs and water.

General Characteristics
Loose / Areolar Connective Tissue

1. Cells Based on Mobility of cells

 Cytes- mature 1. Fixed Cells
 Blasts- immature o Mesenchymal cells
 Clasts o Fibroblasts
o Reticular cells

2. Wandering cells
o Macrophages
o Mast cells
o Plasma cells

2. Ground Substance Principal classes of Ground

substance
Dense Connective Tissue
o Glycosaminoglycans
(GAGs); disacharride
o Proteoglycans
o Multiadhesive
Glycoproteins

3. Fibers 3 Main Types of Fiber

o Collagen Fiber (Type I,

II, III)
o Elastic Fiber
o Reticular Fiber
