Introduction

To make sense of history, it is necessary to understand what it is all about. Many individual think
that history is merely list of names, dates, places and important events. However, the study of history is
more than just knowing and memorizing facts. Reading Philippine History analyses Philippine history
from multiple perspectives through the lens of the primary sources coming from various disciplines and
of different genre.
Students are given opportunities to analyze the author’s background and main arguments,
compare different point of view, identify biases and examine the evidences presented in the document.
The end goal is to develop the historical and critical consciousness of the students so that they will
become versatile, articulate, broad-minded, morally upright and responsible citizens.

LEARNING AND HISTORY OF THE PHILIPPINES

History becomes an active factor in the study of Philippine society. It also includes a look
into the development of Philippine culture through time especially with the influences of the
colonial period that would eventually shape the present Philippine identity.
Why study History?
An examination of the past that can tell us a great deal about how we came to be who
we are. It means looking at the roots of modern instructions, ideas, values and problems.
What is History?

 derived from the Greek noun ISTOIA, meaning learning; As used by the Greek
philosopher Aristotle, history meant a systematic account of a set of natural
phenomena, whether or not chronological factoring was a factor in the account… in the
course
 equivalent Latin word is SCIENTIA;to designate non-chronological systematic accounts
of natural phenomena
