I. OBJECTIVES
A. Content Standards The learners demonstrate an understanding of the relationship
between faults and earthquakes.
B. Performance Standards The learners shall be able to participate in decision making on where
to build structures based on knowledge of the location of active faults
in the community and make an emergency plan and prepare an
emergency kit for use at home and in school.
Learners will be able to:
C. Learning Competencies/Objectives 1. identify and describe the three types of stress applied on rocks;
2. relate the types of stress associated with each type of fault (S8ES-
IIa14 .1.5).

II. CONTENT UNIT TOPIC: EARTHQUAKES AND FAULTS

A. ELICIT Strategy: NAME THAT FAULT
The teacher shows pictures of real-life faults, then the
students are to identify what type of fault is being
shown.

B. ENGAGE Strategy: PICTURE PUZZLE

Identify the term by combining the name of the
pictures. PowerPoint

C. EXPLORE Strategy: ROCK UNDER STRESS ACTIVITY

The students are to do the rock under stress
activity showing compression, tension and shear Activity sheet
stress.
(see attached paper)

D. EXPLAIN Strategy: DISCUSSION

Match each type of stress to its corresponding
type of fault. Explain your choices.
Hint: think about the direction of movement caused by
the stress

E. ELABORATE Strategy: VIDEO PRESENTATION

“How the Himalayas Were Born?”
The teacher shows a video of how the movement
of the plate tectonics and the types of stresses YouTube video,
gave rise to the highest mountain in the world. TV

pen

G. EXTEND Strategy: ASSIGNMENT

1. What are the effects of bending of rocks along
faults? Notebook and
2. Illustrate and explain the Elastic Rebound pen, internet
Theory.

V. REFLECTION
It is important for the students to relate the new topic from the
previous topic to have a continuous and deepened learning.
