What I Need to Know
This module was designed to guide you to a better understanding on the relevant
topics in Mathematics. It is here to help you learn about polygons. You will know a lot about
the classification of polygons according to its side and convexity. And you can discover how
to compute the interior and exterior angles of a polygon.
The lessons are arranged to follow the standard sequence of the course. It is also
coherent to the most essential learning competencies designed for the learners to be applied
in the daily basis.
The Most Essential Learning Competency:
 Illustrates polygon sides, convexity, and angles.

The module is divided into three lessons, namely:

 Lesson 5.1 – Illustrates polygon’s sides.
 Lesson 5.2 – Illustrates polygon’s convexity.
 Lesson 5.3 -- Illustrates polygon’s angles.

After going through this module, you are expected to:

1. Define, identify, and illustrate different kinds of polygons according to the number of
sides and convexity.
2. Identify the parts of a regular polygon: interior, exterior, and the points on the polygon
itself.
3. Determine the sum of the measures of the interior angles of a polygon.
4. Determine the sum of the measures of the exterior angles of a polygon.

What’s In
Observe the group of figures below.
These are polygons These are NOT polygons

What characteristics do the examples of polygons have in common? What is a polygon?

2
What’s New
YOU CAN COUNT ON ME

Count the number of sides in the given figure below.

What Is It
How will you describe a polygon? A polygon is a closed plane figure formed by fitting together
segments end to end with each segment intersecting exactly to others.
What do you call a polygon with three sides? four sides? ten sides? A polygon can be
classified by the number of sides it has. The table below shows the names of polygons.
CLASSIFICATION OF POLYGONS

Number of Sides Name

3 Triangle (tri = three)

4 Quadrilateral (quadri = four)

5 Pentagon (penta = five)

6 Hexagon (hexa = six)

7 Heptagon (hepta = seven)

8 Octagon (octa = eight)

9 Nonagon (nona = nine)

10 Decagon (deca = ten)

11 Undecagon (un+deca = eleven)

12 Dodecagon (duo+deca = twelve)

n n-gon

3
A polygon with 20 sides is called 20-sided polygon or 20-gon.

How are you going to name a polygon? To name a polygon, the vertices are listed in
consecutive order.

The figure is quadrilateral ABCD,

AD is the diagonal of the polygon.

A diagonal of a polygon is a line segment that connects two nonconsecutive vertices.

Example: Name the polygon. Identify its angles, vertices,

sides, and diagonals. Give two pairs of each: consecutive

angles, consecutive vertices, and consecutive sides.

Solution:

1. What is a convex polygon?

2. What is a concave polygon?
3. How does convex and concave polygon differ from each other?

What Is It
What is a convex polygon? A polygon can be convex or concave. A
polygon is convex if no diagonal is in the exterior of the polygon.

What is a concave polygon? A polygon is concave if at least one diagonal is in the

exterior of the polygon.

How does convex and concave polygon differ from each other? To further
understand, here is the illustration on concave and convex:

No diagonal is A diagonal is in
in the exterior the exterior of
of the polygon. the polygon.

Convex Concave

A polygon is equilateral if all sides have equal length. A polygon is

equiangular if all angles have equal measure. A regular polygon is both equilateral
and equiangular. Some regular polygons have special names. A regular quadrilateral
is a square. A regular triangle is an equilateral triangle.

5
Lesson 5.3
Illustrates Polygon’s Angles

What’s New

YOU CAN DO IT!

Materials: triangular piece of paper

STEPS:

1. Label the angles of the triangle.

2. Tear off the angles of angles of the triangle as shown.

3. Place the angles side by side with their vertices at a point.

4. What is the sum of the angles of a triangle?

5. Consider the figure below, a quadrilateral can be partitioned into two triangles. What is the
sum of the angles of a quadrilateral?

6. A pentagon can be partitioned into three triangles. What is the sum of the of it’s angles?

7. Complete the table below.

No. of sides of a polygon 3 4 5 6 7 8 n

No. of triangles formed 1 2 3

Sum of the angle measures 180° 360° 540

1. How will you compute the sum of the interior angles of a convex polygon?

2. Is it possible to find the measure of an interior angle of a regular polygon? How?

3. What is the sum of the measure of the exterior angles of a convex polygon?

6
What Is It
How will you compute the sum of the interior angles of a convex polygon? To find the
sum of the interior angles of a convex polygon with n sides, use (n-2)180°, where n is
the number of sides.

Example. Compute for the sum of the interior angles of a dodecagon.

Solution: A dodecagon is 12-sided polygon, so n=12.

(n-2)180° = (12-2)180°

= (10) 180°

= 1800°

It is possible to find the measure of an interior angle of a regular polygon? How? Yes,
it is. We can find the measure of an interior angle of a regular polygon by dividing the
sum of the measures of the interior angles by the number of sides. In symbol:

(n  2)180
n
Example: What is the measure of angle M?

Solution:

(n  2)180 (6  2)180
= since the hexagon is regular
n 6

(4)180
=
6

720
=
6

M = 120°

What is the sum of the measure of the exterior angles of a convex polygon? The sum
of the measure of the exterior angles of a convex polygon is 360°
