THE SPECTACULAR CELEBRATION OF CHINESE NEW YEAR
Imagine a festival so bright and joyful that it lights up the
whole winter with fireworks, dancing dragons, and the
happiest reunions. That's Chinese New Year, also known as
Lunar New Year or Spring Festival.

It's the most important holiday in China and many parts of

Asia, where people welcome the beginning of a new year
according to the lunar calendar. This isn't just any new year;
it's a time filled with traditions, hopes for good luck, and the
promise of fresh starts.
2024 - A YEAR OF THE DRAGON

A JOURNEY BACK IN TIME

The story of Chinese New Year starts over thousands of years ago. It’s said to have
originated from ancient celebrations to mark the end of the winter season and the joy of
spring's arrival. One legend tells of a monster named Nian, who would come out on New
Year's Eve to eat crops, livestock, and even villagers. The people discovered that Nian was
afraid of loud noises, the color red, and bright lights. So, they started the tradition of
hanging red lanterns, setting off fireworks, and making loud music to scare Nian away and
keep their families safe.

HOW TO CELEBRATE?

1. Cleaning and Decorating: Families clean their homes to sweep away

bad luck and make room for good luck. They decorate with red
lanterns, couplets, and paper cuttings to bring good fortune.
2. Reunion Dinner: On New Year's Eve, families gather for a big feast,
enjoying delicious dishes like dumplings, fish, and sticky rice cakes. It's
a time for laughter, sharing stories, and eating lots of yummy food.
3. Red Envelopes: Children love receiving red envelopes, called
'hongbao,' filled with money from their elders. It's a way to pass on
blessings and good luck for the year ahead.
4. Dragon and Lion Dances: The streets come alive with the vibrant
colors and energetic movements of dragon and lion dances. These
performances are believed to bring good luck and drive away evil
spirits.
5. Lantern Festival: The celebration ends with the Lantern Festival on
the 15th day of the first lunar month. People light lanterns, guess
riddles written on them, and eat tangyuan (sweet rice balls) to mark
the end of the New Year festivities.
THESE CHILDREN GOT LOST. MAKE SURE THEY GET TO THE LANTERN!
