distance but they take different amount of time?

Presentation of the learning competency and learning objective.

Describe the motion of an object in terms of distance or displacement,
speed or velocity, and acceleration.
S7FE-IIIa-1
Subtasked:
Calculate the speed in the given situations.

Activity

Analysis 1. Which of the following runner is the fastest?

2. How did you know that he/she is the fastest?
3. Which of the following is the slowest?
4. How did you know that he/she is the fastest?

Abstraction Discussion of the new concept

The new concept in describing motion will be presented to the learners.

Speed
 How faster an object can cover a distance in a given amount of time
 It is a scalar quantity
 It is the rate of change in distance.

Formula:

SI Units: m/s, km/h (kph), mi/h (mph)

Average speed: it represents the speed of the object throughout its travel.
Instantaneous speed: it refers to the speed of the object at a particular instant.
Constant speed/motion: it refers to speed of an object that did not change
throughout its travel.

Group Activity:
The learners will answer a group activity by following the format in calculating
the speed. After the given amount of time, they will present their output to the
class. Then, each group will give comments to the presentation of outputs of
the other groups.

Application The learners will be asked if they know the following icon and signage.

Speedometer Speed limit

Group activity with a twist:

The class will be grouped into 2. They will do an activity called
“Let’s do hopping!”
Each member of the group will do hopping to measure their speed. The
distance will be measured using a meter stick. They will use a timer to record

the time. Then compute the speed using the formula of speed. They will record
their speed on a manila paper and once they are finished, they will present their
output to the class.
Who is/are the fastest?
Who is/are the slowest?

Assessment/Evaluation Calculate the speed in the following situations. Follow the format. 5 points
each.
1. Tristan takes 2 hours to walk 8 miles. How fast did he walk?
2. If you move 50 meters in 10 seconds, what is your speed?
3. A cyclist travels 20 km in 4 hours. What speed did the cyclist cycle at?

Assignment/
Enrichment Answer the following on a ½ crosswise. Follow the format.
1. The distance between 2 cities is 144 km, it takes me 3 hours to travel
between these cities. What speed did I travel at?
2. A car travels a distance of 540 km in 6 hours. What speed did it travel
at?

It is a continuous change in position with respect to the
reference point for a particular time interval.

It is the total length of the path travelled by an object.

It is the shortest path measured from initial position to final

position.

It is a quantity that has magnitude and direction.
