ELONGATION INDEX

BS 812-105.2

Aggregate particles are classified as elongated when they have a length (greatest
dimension) of more than 1.8 of their mean sieve size.
The test in not applicable to material passing a 6.30 mm BS test sieve or retained on a
50.0 mm test sieve.
Sieves uses in test are (50.0, 37.5, 28.0, 20.0, 14.0, 10.0 and 6.30) mm.
Dry the sample and take minimum mass as per table below:

Nominal size of material (mm) Minimum mass of test portion after

rejection of oversize and undersize
particles (kg)
40 15
28 5
20 2
14 1
10 0.5

Carry out sieve analysis. Discard all aggregate retained on 50.0 mm sieve and passing
6.3 mm sieve.
Weigh each individual size-fraction retained on the sieve and store in separate tray.
Sum up all fractions in trays as M1.
Select the length gauge and gauge each particle separately by hand.
Combine and weigh all the elongated particles as M2.

Calculation:

Flakiness index is calculated as:

Elongation index = (M2 / M1) × 100

Express the elongation index to the nearest whole number.
