Sentence Writing Pre-Activities:
Use These Activities for Students
Not Yet Ready to Write Full Sentences
1. Match single words to pictures (such as the word “dog” to a
picture of a dog). Note: write a few words on small pieces
of paper and have the student choose the correct one
(print multiple copies of all pages for practice).
2. Write single words about pictures (such as the word “dog”
for a picture of a dog).
3. Match an adjective + noun to a picture (such as matching
the words “red train” and “green train” to those pictures or
“big ball” and “little ball” to those pictures).
4. Write an adjective + noun about a picture (such as writing
the words “red train” and “green train” about those
pictures or “big ball” and “little ball” about those pictures).
5. Match phrases like the ones the previous step, but add a
word such as “a” or “the” (such as “the red train” or “a little
ball”).
6. If appropriate for the child’s vocabulary knowledge, start to
have the student match full sentences (such as “The red
train is on the table”).
7. When the child has had enough practice with the above
activities (and other language development activities), have
the child write one sentence about a picture.
Note: an idea to make this fun for the child is to use pictures
from a child’s favorite movies, shows, apps, etc. You can
usually find these with an online image search and take a
screenshot to paste into the templates on the following pages.
