IDEX 2021: Tawazun to lead on UAE procurement

The UAE’s Tawazun is to take control of the management of procurements for the UAE’s armed forces in a resolution signed by Sheikh
Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan on 24 February at the IDEX trade show in Abu Dhabi.

Tawazun CEO Tareq Abdulraheem Al Hosani told Janes that under the resolution the organisation will manage procurement for the armed
forces and Abu Dhabi police, as well as other bodies that include the Presidential Guard and critical national infrastructure protection
force.

“Here we see a lot of synergies that can avoid the duplication of before because of the independence of the system,” Al Hosani said. “At
the same time, we [can] provide better procurement plans and savings across different projects … and synergizing the supply chain and
having a homogeneous system rather than scattered procurement.”

Tawazun has been placed in charge of the UAE’s military procurement processes. (Tawazun)

The organisation has now been given end-to-end control of procurement, ranging from developing and articulating concept development
for the armed forces through to contract management, quality assurance and control, as well as vendor registration and management,
and the approval and supervision of offset projects.

Furthermore, Tawazun has also been given control of preparing, managing, and allocating procurement budgets for the armed forces and
Abu Dhabi police.

Tawazun has been able to “hit the ground running” on procurement processes, according to Al Hosani, who is working with the country’s
General Headquarters (GHQ) and Ministry of Defence to identify areas for improvement such as contract language and process
improvements in order to reduce burdens on suppliers and users.
