Foundations Program
“UFLI Foundations strikes the perfect balance between structure
and responsiveness to students’ needs. The program features
ample opportunities for students to practice, along with built-in
gradual release. It provides teachers with detailed lesson plans,
a PowerPoint slide deck to accompany each lesson, and
downloadable materials for homework or center activities.”

Why Do We Need a Foundational Skills Program?
Our data is reflecting a common trend of learning loss during the pandemic and a
strong need for high-quality instruction across our school to help students make up
for lost time!
● Simple View of Reading (Decoding x Linguistic Comprehension= Reading
Comprehension) means that students can never have reading comprehension
skills higher than their ability to decode!

● Proficiency in foundational skills can predict long-term reading achievement

and can support long-term reading success!
Remember…
Ideal Multi-Tiered Support
System Model Assumes:

● 5% of Students in Tier 3
● 15% of Students in Tier 2
● 80% of Students in Tier 1

However, our assessments of

foundational skills leave us with
the opposite scenario…

Because of our large ratio of students scoring in the
intensive range on assessments of foundational skills, we
need a foundation skills program that:

Addresses all components of word level reading, including:

○ Phonological Awareness and Phonemic Awareness to an Advanced Level (remember what
you’ve learned about orthographic mapping in LETRS! 😃)
○ Print Concepts
○ Explicit Phonics and Decoding Instruction
○ Blending
○ Word Chaining
○ Heart Word Instruction tied to Phonics
○ Guided Spelling
○ Connections in Decodable Text

And, UFLI provides all of this in a simple, affordable, easy-to-follow format!

Because our data shows deficits in foundational skills, this will be our focus
area; however, we must continue to supplement with our strong oral
language, vocabulary, and comprehension instruction during the remaining
time in our literacy block. We will not be making changes to this instruction at
this time.
