Puertollano ED205 School Organization, Administration & Supervision

Definition, Scope, Need, & Objectives of School Supervision

School supervision is a process of providing guidance and support to teachers and other

school staff to improve the quality of education (Pillai, 2001). This involves the systematic

observation, evaluation, and feedback on the teaching-learning process to enhance the learning

outcomes of students (Pillai, 2001). School supervision encompasses all aspects of the teaching-

learning process, including curriculum development, instruction, assessment, and professional

development (Pillai, 2001).

The need for school supervision arises from the complexity of the education system and

the challenges faced by teachers and students (Tahir, 2014). School supervision ensures that

teaching and learning are aligned with the goals of education and that educational standards are

met (Tahir, 2014). It plays a critical role in ensuring the quality of education and that resources

are utilized effectively.

The primary objective of school supervision is to improve the quality of education

through the continuous improvement of teaching and learning (Otieno, 2014). School

supervision aims to ensure that students are provided with high-quality education, that teachers

are supported in their professional development, and that the school is able to meet its objectives

(Otieno, 2014). Other objectives of school supervision include ensuring the effective use of

resources, promoting innovation and creativity in education, and developing a culture of

accountability and transparency (Otieno, 2014).

In conclusion, school supervision is an essential process that plays a crucial role in

ensuring the quality of education. Through the guidance and support provided to teachers and

school staff, school supervision enhances the teaching-learning process and improves learning

outcomes for students (Pillai, 2001). By ensuring that education standards are met, resources are

utilized effectively, and a culture of accountability and transparency is developed, school

supervision contributes significantly to the achievement of educational goals (Tahir, 2014;

Otieno, 2014).
