Tennis star Coco Gauff has been named to TIME Magazine's "Women of the Year" list,
revealed Wednesday (21 February).
The magazine said it chose 12 women with this guidance: "Creating a better future for
women means building bridges—across generations, communities, and borders. These
extraordinary leaders are working toward a more equal world."
Gauff, 19, is the lone athlete on the list, which also includes actress/director Greta Gerwig,
Nobel laureate Claudia Goldin, singer Andra Day, climate activist Jacqui Patterson among
others.
"I’m sure the ‘Face of Tennis’ and glitz and glam will come along with" success, Gauff told
TIME. "But I don’t really care about any of that. I really just care about how many of those
major trophies I can get in my house."
She continued: "At first, I was scared to grow up," she said about turning 20 in March. "But
now I’m embracing adulthood. There’s always going to be change needed in this world. I
hope I can play a small part."
Gauff won on Wednesday at the WTA 1000 stop in Dubai, coming back to beat Karolina
Pliskova in three sets.
Gauff reacted on court to the announcement in Dubai, saying: "It’s really cool to be on that list
among other amazing women. Especially making it so young. I’m super grateful they chose
me to do that. I’m going to the event in March. I’m really excited for that. One of the rare times
I get dressed up, not in this [match] stuff."
