QRG 915 EN 01 USB-HART-modem-installation
1 Overview
This document provides guidance to connect, install and communicate to a HART device using the GW HART USB
MODEM.
This document assumes the user understands basic electrical concepts included 4-20 mA signals, control wiring, HART
communication, etc.
A minimum of 230 Ω loop resistance is necessary for the HART signal to be read. Power supplies use capacitors to
maintain a constant voltage and these capacitors will filter out the HART signal if the loop resistance is too low. It is best to
connect the GW USB HART MODEM directly across the HART device or across an external 250 Ω resistor.
When the GW HART USB test program recognizes the GW HART USB MODEM, the screen below will appear. Select the
appropriate GW HART USB MODEM device from the Device drop down menu (listed by serial number). Pressing the scan
now button to scan for attached HART devices from address 0 to 15. When the HART device is found, the HART address,
Manufacturer and TAG is listed as displayed in Figure 3: GW HART USB Test program.
If the HART device is not displayed after a scan, verify that the wiring is correct, and the GW HART USB MODEM is
connected across the external 250 Ω resistor or the HART device. Alternatively, the HART address may be set to greater
than 15 and will not appear during a scan.
5 PACTware
PACTware is a software package that provides an interface to configure field bus devices using communication DTM files.
PACTware may be downloaded from https://pactware.com.
Ensure the communication DTM is installed for the corresponding HART device. Open PACTware and right click on HOST
PC and select Add device.
Select the GW HART USB MODEM from the Device for window and click the OK button.
Figure 6: Connect
Right click on the GW HART USB MODEM in the Project window and select Topology Scan.
The Topology Scan window will appear. Click the arrow button to begin scanning for HART devices. The GW HART USB
MODEM will scan for HART devices address between 0 and 63.
When the scan is complete, the Topology Scan will suggest the DTM that best represents the discovered HART device.
Select the corresponding DTM and click Apply and Close.
In the Project tree, click on the newly added HART device and click the connect button. Double click on the HART device
and the DTM will open. Configure the appropriate settings using the Menu/Variable window. The configuration options are
dependent on the device manufacturer.
