1. (a) Derive the emf equation for primary and secondary induced emf in a transformer also draw and
explain the phasor diagram for transformer on no load. (5)
(b) A 500 KVA, 11000V/400 V, 50 Hz. Single phase transformer has 100 turns on the secondary
winding. Calculate (a) The approximate no. of turns in the primary winding,( (5)
b) the approximate
value of the primary and secondary currents, and (c) the maximum value of flux in the core.

2. (a) Briefly state the constructional details of rotating electrical machines with the help of a diagram
• clearly stating the function of each part of machine. (5)
(b) Derive an expression for torque produced in electrical machines and state the concept and
significance of torque angle. (5)

3. (a) State briefly the principle of electromechanical energy conversion in case of motor and
generator. (5)
(b) State the various losses in rotating electrical machines and state the techniques used to
minimize them. (5)

4 (a) State the various methods of excitation in DC machines with diagram and also clearly mention
the suitability of each type of excitation. (5)
(b) The armature supply voltage of a dc motor is 230 V. The armature current is 12 A, the

armature resistance is 0.8 Ohm, and the speed is 100 rad/s. Calculate (i) the induced emf (ii) the
electromagnetic torque (iii) the electrical power input to the armature (iv) The mechanical power
developed by armature and (v) the armature copper losses.

5. (a) A 500 KVA transformer has 2500 watts iron loss, and 7500 watts copper loss at full load. The

power factor is 0.8 lagging. Calculate: (i) transformer efficiency at full load (ii) maximum
efficiency of the transformer (iii) output KVA corresponding to maximum efficiency (iv)
transformer efficiency at half load.
• (b) State the need of starter in DC machines. Draw and explain four point starter used in DC
motors. (5)
