Example 1. Find the sum and product of the expression

x2 – 9x +20=0. Determine first the value of a = 1, b= -9, c=20
Then substitute to the formula –b/a.

= 9 = 20

II. Product of the Roots of Quadratic Equation

Example 2. Determine the sum and product of the

quadratic equation 3x2 -7x + 2 = 0.The values of a = 3, b=
-7 and c = 2. Then substitute to the formula.

III. Finding the quadratic equation given its roots

Write the equation in the form ax2 bx + c = 0 given the

following roots.
Example 1. 5 and 9
Solution:x = 5 x = 9
( x – 5) ( x – 9) = 0 apply sa ZPP
X2 -9x -5x + 45 = 0 by foil method(combine terms)
X2 – 14x + 45 = 0 - quadratic equation
Example 2. 6 and -3
Solution:6 and 3
( x- 6) (x + 3) = 0 by ZPP
X2 – 6x + 3x +18 = 0 combine like terms
X2 -3x =18 = 0 - quadratic equation

Roots:__________
3. x2 + 4x – 21 = 0 __________ Product:_______Roots:__________
4.2x2 + 3x – 2 = 0 ___________Product:_______ Roots:__________
5.3x2 – 10x -8 =0 ___________Product:_______ Roots:__________

Assessment Task 7 SHORT QUIZ! (5 min)

Write the quadratic equation in the form ax 2 + bx + c = 0
given the following roots. Show your solution.
1. 8 and 10
2. 6 and 3
3. -8 and -10
4. -3 and -15

Task 8 EXPLORE!
Assignment Let’s make a Scrap Book!
Working in group 3 and make a scrap book that 1
contains all the things you have learned in this lesson.
1. 1.A journal on how to determine a quadratic
equation given the roots, or given the sum and the
product of the roots.
2.At least 5 examples of finding the quadratic
equations given the roots, or given the sum and the
product of the roots, and;
3. Three pictures showing the applications of the sum
and the product of the roots of quadratic equations in
real-life. Describe how quadratic equations are
illustrated in the picture.
