LESSON 1 & 2: INTRODUCTION TO READING AND WRITING

In language learning, the four macro skills refer to the primary language abilities that learners aim to develop
in order to effectively communicate in that language. In English language learning, these four macro skills
are:
Listening: Listening is the ability to understand spoken language. This skill involves not only hearing the
words being spoken but also comprehending their meaning, context, and nuances. Effective listening is
essential for communication in various situations, such as conversations, lectures, presentations, and media
consumption.
Speaking: Speaking is the ability to produce and articulate spoken language. This skill involves expressing
oneself fluently and accurately, using appropriate vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation, and intonation.
Effective speaking skills enable learners to engage in conversations, deliver speeches, participate in
discussions, and convey their thoughts and ideas effectively.
Reading: Reading is the ability to understand written language. This skill involves interpreting and
comprehending written texts, including books, articles, essays, emails, and other forms of written
communication. Effective reading skills enable learners to extract information, understand ideas, analyze
texts critically, and expand their knowledge and vocabulary.
Writing: Writing is the ability to produce written language. This skill involves expressing oneself coherently
and effectively through writing, using appropriate vocabulary, grammar, punctuation, and style. Effective
writing skills enable learners to communicate their thoughts, opinions, and information clearly and
persuasively through various forms of written communication, such as essays, reports, emails, and creative
writing.
Viewing:
Viewing is an additional skill that has become increasingly important in the digital age, particularly with the
rise of visual media and digital communication platforms. This skill involves interpreting and understanding
visual information, including images, videos, graphs, charts, and multimedia presentations. Effective viewing
skills enable learners to analyze visual content critically, interpret visual messages, understand visual
storytelling techniques, and effectively communicate and present information using visual aids. Viewing skills
are essential for navigating digital media, understanding visual communication in various contexts, and
effectively engaging with visual content in both personal and professional settings.
