Learning Episode 1: PRINCIPLES OF LEARNING

My Learning Episode Overview

This Episode is centered on time-tested principles of learning which when applied will lead
to effective learning. It is good to find out the manner and the extent to which these principles
are applied in the classroom.

My Intended Learning Outcome

In this Episode, I must be able to identify classroom practices that apply or violate each of
the principles of learning.

My Performance Criteria
I will be rated along the following:

a. Quality of my observations and documentation,

b. Completeness and depth of my analysis,
c. Depth and clarity of my classroom observation-based reflections,
d. Completeness, organization, clarity of my portfolio and
e. time of submission of my portfolio.
My Learning Essentials

Here are time-tested principles of learning:

1. Effective learning begins with setting clear expectations and learning outcomes.

2. Learning is an active process. “What I hear, I forget; what I see, I remember; what I do,
I understand.”

3. Learning is the discovery of the personal meaning of ideas. Students are given the
opportunity to connect what they learn with other concepts learned, with real world
experiences and with their own lives.

4. Learning is a cooperative and a collaborative process.

My Map
To realize my Intended Learning Outcomes, I will work my way through these steps:

Step 1 Guided by a question/question, I will reflect on my experience, write down my

reflection.

Step 2 will identify evidence of applications/violations of the principles of learning. (You

are given a sample in # 1 principle.) I can cite more than one evidence per principle
of learning.

Step 3 will observe a class.

Step 4 will review the principles of learning given in “My learning Essentials”.
My Learning Activities
As I observe a class, I will use the Observation Sheet for a more focused observation then
analyze and reflect on my observations with the help of guide questions.

My Analysis
1. Which principles of learning was/were most applied?

The learning principle that is mostly applied is the “Learning is the discovery of personal
meaning and relevance of ideas”.

2. Which principles of learning was least applied? Why was/were the principles not very
much applied? Give an instance where this/these principle/s could have been applied.

The learning principle that is least applied “Cooperative and collaborative process”. It is
least applied because the teacher spent most of the time in discussing and asking
questions. The teacher didn’t do much activity or some collaborative process.

3. How did the application of these learning principles affect learning?

The learning principles affect learning because the learners become more joyful and
interested to the lesson. It helps learners to understand what is being taught and they gain
lots of knowledge.
4. How did the non-application of these learning principles affect learning?
The non-application of these learning principles affects learning because the students will
not be interested, cannot understand what is being taught, and there is possible that the
students got a low grade or failed to pass.

5. Do you agree with these principles of learning? Or have you discovered that they are not
always, correct?

Yes, I agree with all the principles of learning because as what I observed during the lesson
of teacher, she applied it in the classroom so that her teaching become more effective and I
can see the eyes of the children that they’re happy to learn and more likely they are
interested with the lesson.

My Reflections
My reflections and lessons learned on my observations of my Resource Teacher’s/s’
application/non-application of these principles
Among those practices that I observed, which practices will I adopt and which ones will I
improve on? What lessons did I learn?
Practices worth adopting
The practice that is worth adopting is “learning is the discovery of personal meaning
and relevance of ideas” because the students much active in problem-solving situation and they
are constructivist. They are given a chance to solve situation by their own and let the students
discover learning.

Practices to avoid and to improve on

In the teaching learning process, we need to avoid favoritism towards student, we
should treat our students equally no matter who they are. As a teacher, we should avoid this
kind of situation because it can affect the academic performance towards the students, lack of
self-confidence and at the same time the children do not study well.

As what I observed, the things that needs for improvement is the classroom
management, because sometimes the teacher doesn’t mind the students even if her classroom
is too noisy, some of her students are talking and didn’t listen to her anymore. As a teacher, it is
important that we should always remind the classroom rules before we proceed the discussion
and always check the students time to time.
Lesson learned
The lessons that I have learned from my observation of the principles of learning. You
should have patience, communication to your students and the lesson should be relatable to
them. The teacher should provide engagement activities that can encourage their personal
construction of knowledge, for example, hands-on, minds-on science and math; drama; creative
movement; artistic representation; writing and talking to learn. Ensure that students are invited
or challenged to build on prior knowledge, integrating new understandings with existing
understandings.
