Pooja Srinivasan was a B.E

Electronics and Communication
Engineering student of batch
2018-2022. Currently, she is
pursuing her Master of Science in
Data Science at Columbia
University, US. Her research
interests include the areas of
Statistics, Fuzzy Logic, Natural
Language Processing, and
Machine Learning. She aims to
be a Data Scientist / ML
researcher in the product and
service industry to work on
realistic problem solving by designing experiments, interpreting data & inferring
conclusions, and eventually leading the data science team.

During her time at SSN, Pooja was an active member of IEEE and served as the chair
of the IEEE communications society chapter (2021–2022), treasurer of the IEEE
student chapter (2021–2022), and secretary of the IEEE communications society
chapter (2020–2021). Pooja was a notable member of our college's design club
(SDC) and had a zeal for design, especially graphic design. She eventually rose to
the position of Head of Design at SDC and Impulse, the departmental magazine for
ECE.

Along with having technical capabilities, Pooja mentions that "Membership and roles
held in student groups, particularly IEEE and events, honed my leadership and
communication skills." Also, she says, "All of these experiences have enhanced my
planning & organizing skills, interpersonal communication, decision-making
capabilities, and persuasion. With these skills, I was able to strike a balance between
academics, research, and extracurricular activities, which I am confident will also be
pivotal to my professional success.” Finally, Pooja expresses her strong belief in this
statement: "Being the leaders of these clubs trained me in a variety of ways, and I
learned who I really was. The leadership positions I took in college helped me
become confident and bold, which is essentially one of the reasons for my success
in UG.”

2022

Dear SSN,

I’m Varsha, a grad student at

Duke University pursuing Medical
Technology Design. It's been an
eye-opening first semester here
and I'm continuing to learn and
grow with my peers in this 1.5 year
masters journey.

With that being said, I’ll always be

grateful to SSN for giving me an
unforgettable undergrad
experience. During my stint at

SSN, I was fortunate enough to be the Chairperson of IEEE EMBS and Vice-Chair of
IEEE. Creating an impact through community is a key part of who I am, and
motivated me to join the IEEE society. These student organisations helped me
explore and learn to stay connected, especially during the pandemic, through virtual
expert talks, invigorating webinars, and hackathons. It gave me the platform to be in
the forefront of event organisation and allowed me to lead the launch of the EMBS
Newsletter “The Bionik Times” for the first time in the BME Department!

The IEEE society and their multiple flagship events helped me develop the
strengths and skills that are driving my professional career even now. I'm grateful to
have been part of such a wonderful experience.

Hi,
I'm Michael, an alumni of SSN
(2018-2022) IT Department. I'm
currently working as a Software
Developer in Lynk Logistics.
During my period at SSN, one of
the best things that happened to
me was being part of IEEE.
Initially I was an active volunteer
for IEEE events which was fun-
filled and informative.It also
helped me gain a lot of new
friendships with students from
other departments and

batches.During my final year, I was honoured with the role of 'Chair of IEEE'. This
gave me an amazing opportunity to learn and practice great qualities like leadership,
commitment, perseverance and much more.IEEE helped me explore areas other
than my academics which serves to help me till date. I will forever be grateful to SSN
for giving me a chance to be a part of IEEE.

Chair of SSN IEEE Computer

for the year 2021-22. I have been
an active member in IEEE for 4
years. As a Chair, I have
organized various events,
workshops and contests for the
members and non-members of
IEEE.

I have volunteered for our

student branch’s flagship event,

Hack and Tackle, 24-hour hackathon. I also participated in the IEEE Xtreme
competitions and secured top ranks. This was a great opportunity for me to fine tune
my programming skills and to learn to work productively and effectively as a team.
Under Sree Sharmila ma’am’s guidance, I have organised various IEEE events such
as placement talks, coding contests, paper presentations, membership drives and
technical workshops on ML, data analytics & blockchain among many others.

I am also a recipient of the IEEE Richard E. Merwin scholarship for Fall 2021. It
consists of a $1000 USD cash grant and an opportunity to act as IEEE Computer
Society Regional Student Ambassador. This scholarship was awarded in recognition
of my exemplary involvement in student chapter activities, excellent academic

achievements, and extracurricular activities. Being the first student from SSN to win
this scholarship, I feel extremely proud to bring recognition for the SSN IEEE branch
at a global level. Our professors and college management supported me throughout
the process. I also got the opportunity to share my experience with REM scholarship
in the event organized by KnowYourIEEE team and to network with other scholars
from around the globe.

I believe that the various responsibilities that I handled have shaped me into a well-
rounded person. Finding workarounds for the challenges I faced have instilled in me
a spirit of optimism and resourcefulness. The student membership allows the
students to expand their network, share knowledge and to find ways to use their
skills for the benefit of the society. I encourage the students in our college to join
IEEE and to be a part of the world’s largest technical professional organization.

We got to know about the other IEEE student society chapters in our college during
the IEEE Induction meet in Oct 2021. I got to know the SSN EMBS AND Comsoc
chairs then and it was a networking experience for us. We also had an interaction
with the juniors about our clubs and chapters.

We had a placement talk with Mr MS Vignesh, Paypal. It was conducted to enable

students to understand about oncampus and offcampus opportunities. It was my
first time reading a welcome address and it gave a lot of confidence. We went on to

IEEECS which were a grand success. It was a wonderful team of individuals of Anni,
Afsheen, Karthik Raja, etc and led by Aadhithya. Sree Sharmila maam was our faculty
coordinator.

We also went ahead and conducted an event called Techathlon which was an IEEE
event. Each student chapter had a contest in it and the winner would be chosen
based on the cumulative score. It was an amazing networking experience to
coordinate with Michael, Varsha, Santhoshiya and other Ieeecs, Embs and Comsoc
volunteers.

I also had the opportunity of coordinating the SSN IEEE Website development.
Working alongside talented individuals like Karthik Raja and Hariharan gave an
awesome end result. We showcased the website and it was accepted well.

We were also given an awesome farewell when our tenure ended in May 2022. It
was indeed a bittersweet moment and the club was in safe hands.

Each event taught me something new and gave some learning experience. The
event conducting and speaking experience was something that is very tough to get
at a very young age and IEEE gave me that. The exposure I would go on to add onto
many things in my life.
