Task 1
This task is assessed by criterion A(Analyzing), and criterion B (Organizing)
Timing recommendations: 40 minutes
Read the poem and answer the questions that follow.
If
If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you;
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too;
1
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or being lied about, don’t deal in lies,
Or being hated, don’t give way to hating,
And yet don’t look too good, nor talk too wise:
2
2. Which line in the first verse suggest you learn patience?
The fifth line in the first verse ‘If you can wait and not be tired by
waiting’ suggests you learn patience as in this verse it says to wait
which is basically patience. It says to wait and our time will come.
3. In your own words explain “ And yet don’t look too good, nor talk too wise”
(verse 1)
This verse says that if we get ahead of ourselves and not think that
we have or know everything like overconfidence, it will lead to
failure and ruin our lives. Being overconfident can lead to fail and
not thinking straightly.
3
5. What is another word for ‘Will’ (verse 3)?
‘If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue, Or walk with
Kings – nor lose the common touch’. This is the first two lines of
the last verse as it is comparing talking with crowds with walking
with kings without using like or as it is considered a metaphor.
4
8. Pick out an example of hyperbole in this poem.
Why do you think it is hyperbole?
‘With sixty seconds’ worth of distance run,’ This is the sixth line of
the last verse and I think it is a hyperbole as it says that sixty
seconds is worth a distance run but hyperbole is exaggerating and
sixty second can’t be a long distance.

This story is of a little boy named John who lost his father at the age of sixteen.
He was at school and was very happy playing with his friends and studying. He
went to his house after school and this time his uncle came to pick him up rather
than his father which was usual. The boy didn’t suspect anything but when he got
home, he got the drastic news by his Mom. His father died in a fire at his mechanic
factory. He was traumatized. He always wanted to open up his own mechanic store
since he wanted to follow his father’s steps.
After seeing what happened with his father, he didn’t want to be a mechanic. He
was so sad that he stopped going to school. Is friends later found about the incident
and wanted to motivate John. When he finally started to go back to school, his
friends talked to him and tried to get him on his feet so that he can follow his dream
of opening his own mechanical shop. After a few weeks of motivation, John was
ready to follow his dream despite thinking what happened to his father. He started
to pay attention in classes and then joined a mechanical workshop during his
vacations. He then got a job at a mechanical shop. The boss of that shop was
impressed and wanted to give him a promotion. He was now a chief mechanic. He
then later quit that job to start his own company.
He started to gather land for his shop and then hired labor. In memory of his
father, he named his shops after his father. ‘Quincy’s Lab’ was the name. He was
very happy with his work and wanted to continue it. His shop became the number
one shop in the country. People from different cities came to get their vehicles

checked at John’s shop.
One day he got invited to the mechanics buyers’ club where people could buy
other mechanical shop if the seller is willing so he wanted to get another shop in his
name so he went. He brought his best friend who motivated him most to the club
and on the way a truck crashed into their car. They both were rushed to the hospital.
John barely made it but his friend did not make it and died. John was traumatized
again.
