Assignment Overview
1. Explain the difference between manufacturing operations and service operations.
2. Provide a sample of a service organization.

1. Manufacturing operations involves the manufacture of tangible goods such as

cars, factories and electronics, with a focus on physical processes and quality
control. Whereas, the service operations provide material services such as health
care or consultancy emphasizing customer interaction and differentiation. Capital
investment in machinery and inventory management is frequently needed for
manufacturing, while service operations rely heavily on skilled labor and
knowledge. In general, the services are delivered close to clients and
manufacturing may take place in separate production facilities or distribution
networks. In conclusion, the manufacturing and service business differs in terms
of output, processes, resource requirements as well as customer engagement
approaches.

2. Further, take the restaurant as an example of a sample service organization. In

restaurants, instead of manufacturing goods, the customer will be offered a
dining experience. It involves providing a menu of food and beverages, taking
orders, preparing meals, and ensuring a pleasant atmosphere for customers.
Factors such as customer service, food quality, atmosphere and the ability to
meet individual preferences play an important role in restaurant success. These
are inherent to the services operation and distinguish them from manufacturing,
which focuses solely on physical production.

As a student aspiring to enter the tourism and hospitality industry, I find it essential
to align my goals and ambitions with the university's Vision, Mission, and Objectives.
The University's vision is usually meant to represent its long term goals. It seems to
me that this is a commitment to nurture future leaders in tourism and hospitality, who
will be able to lead positive change for the sector. I'm trying to become one of these
future leaders, who not only has an excellent career but also makes a contribution
towards sustainable practices and innovation in this area.

The University's mission often spells out its aims and the way it intends to achieve
them. This corresponds to my own mission as a student and future professional. To
become a responsible and ethical tourism and hospitality professional, I see my
mission as to acquire the knowledge and skills of the University. This includes
understanding the different needs of passengers, promoting cultural sensitivity and
ensuring that I create experiences which are both memorable and sustainable.

Lastly, the university's Objectives may include specific goals for student outcomes.
These objectives represent the beginning of my journey towards becoming a
successful tourism and hospitality professional. Whether it's to gain practical
experience through internships, establish a global network or understand the latest
industry technologies, I want to achieve those objectives in line with my own career
ambitions. Finally, I think my role as a student and future employee is symbiotic with
the university where I work towards achieving my goals by contributing to an
institution's overall mission and vision for the industry.
