Part 2. CONTINUITY OF A FUNCTION

1. f(x)=x2+6x+9 x= -2
Step 1: If x= -2, then f(-2) = 1

lim f ( x )= lim ¿ ¿( x 2+ 6 x+ 9) = (−2)2+ 6 (−2 ) +9=1

Step 2: x→−2 x→−2

Step 3: f(-2)= 1 = lim f (x) .

x→−2

Therefore, f is continuous at x= -2 .

2
x + x−2
2. f ( x )= x= -2
x+2
Step 1: If x= -2, then f(-2) = -3

2
lim f ( x )= lim ¿ ¿( x + x−2 ) = ( x +2)(x−1) = lim (x−1) = -3
Step 2: x→−2 x→−2 x +2 x+2 x →−2

Step 3: f(-2)= -3 = lim f (x) .

x→−2

Therefore, f is continuous at x= -2.
