1. Mechanics (7 L)
[WILL NOT BE DONE DIRECTLY IN CLASS]
1. Introduction (1 L): Newton's laws of motion, Conservation of Energy and Momentum),
Limitations of Newtons laws: -Problems involving constraints and friction, - Inertial and non-inertial
reference frames, -Motion of a rigid body in a plane and in 3 D, the need to use angular velocity vector and
Moment of Inertia to study rigid body dynamics.
2. Simple Harmonic Oscillator (2L): Overview including the differential equation and solution (no
derivations required). Introduction of damping term in differential equation and solution (no
derivation) three cases of damping: Under-damped, critically damped and overdamped motion.
Logarithmic decrement, power dissipation, relaxation time, quality factor (no derivations) (1 L)
Forced vibrations: Differential equation and solution (no derivation), Resonance: amplitude and
velocity resonance (no derivations), applications (1L)

3. Basic ideas of vector calculus (3L): Gradient, divergence, curl and physical significance;
Line, surface, volume integrals, Statement of Stoke's theorem and divergence theorems (no
derivations) Conservative and non-conservative forces, Potential energy function F = grad V,
equipotential surfaces and meaning of gradient.
4. Basic ideas of partial differential equations and their solutions (1 L)
Optics (5 L) [Flipped Classroom]
1. Interference and Diffraction ( 2 L): Distinction between interference and
diffraction, Fresnel and Fraunhofer diffraction, Expressions and qualitative
descriptions of fringes for single slit, double slit and multiple slit Fraunhofer
diffraction. Diffraction grating: resolving power and applications.
2. Polarisation (1L): Polarisation: Introduction, polarisation by reflection,
polarisation by double reflection, scattering of light, circular and elliptical
polarisation, optical activity.
3. Lasers** (2L) : Principles and working of laser : population inversion, pumping,
various modes, threshold population inversion with examples.
3. Electromagnetism and Dielectric and Magnetic Properties of Materials (8L)
1. Maxwell's equations: In integral and differential forms and concept of displacement current (3L)
2. Polarization and Dielectrics: Polarisation, permeability and dielectric constant, polar and non-polar
dielectrics, internal fields in a solid, Clausius- Mossotti equation (expression only), applications of
dielectrics. (2L).
3. Magnetic Properties of Materials: Magnetisation, permeability and susceptibility, classification of
magnetic materials, ferromagnetism, magnetic domains and hysteresis, applications. (3L)

4. Statistical Mechanics (8L)


1. Introduction, Macrostate and Microstate, Density of states (4 L)
2. Qualitative treatment of Maxwell Boltzmann, Fermi-Dirac and Bose -Einstein statistics. (4L)
5. Quantum Mechanics (16L)
1. Introduction to quantum physics: black body radiation, Planck's hypothesis, explanation using
the photon concept, Compton effect. (2 L)
2. de Broglie hypothesis, wave-particle duality, verification of matter waves, uncertainty principle (2
L)
3. Postulates of Quantum Mechanics. Concept of wave functions, operators,
commutators, probabilities, expectation values, eigenvalues and eigen functions(4 L).
4. Schrodinger's time dependent wave equation (TDSWE) : Solution, Particle in a box (1-D and
3-D), Boundary conditions, Degeneracy (4 L).
5. Examples of Schrodinger's wave equation (SWE) and its solution for Quantum Harmonic
Oscillator (QHO) and Hydrogen (H) atom ( 4 L) (No derivation required): Only describe the
potential energy functions and SWE for these two cases and eigenvalues and eigen functions,
boundary conditions, quantum numbers and degeneracies, what is meant by ground state energy for
QHO, Bohr's correspondence equation for H-atom. (4 L).
