Assignment # 2

CS364 IOT
Basit Faisal – 2021126

Part-1: Identify and analyze a device that is an IOT device now, but in the past was a
non-IOT device. Describe and list the features of the device. Compare the functions of
the device in the past to the functions of the device now. For your chosen IOT device,
list any improvements or any diminishments if they exist, over the non-IOT device.
Describe any limitations that are present in the new IOT version of the device.
Describe any privacy issues with the IOT device that never existed in the original
version of the device. Compare the price of the original device to the price of the new
IOT version of the device. When performing a price comparison, attempt to
normalize the changing value of currency over time by using an online inflation
calculator.

Ans) The device in consideration is the “Door Lock”. In the past locks were mechanical devices
operated by keys or handles, used for security of building halls. They had no connectivity or
smart features and required physical interaction for locking and unlocking. In the past the
traditional door lock provided features like:

 Manual operation using keys or handles.

 No connectivity or remote access capabilities.
 Limited monitoring or logging of door access.
 No integration with other systems/devices.
 Basic security mechanism to prevent un-authorized access.
In comparison the smart door lock used nowadays in secure facilities provide features like:

 Remote access and control via smartphone apps or web interfaces.

 Keyless entry options such as PIN codes, RFID cards, or biometric authentication.
 Integration with smart home or building automation systems for centralized control.
 Activity logging and monitoring for tracking door access history.
 Alerts and notifications for unauthorized entry attempts or unusual activity.
 Temporary access permissions for guests or deliveries.
 Compatibility with voice assistants for hands-free operation.
If we were to analyze for improvements over traditional door locks, they can be:

 Enhanced convenience with remote access and keyless entry options.

 Improved security features such as activity logging and alerts.
 Integration with smart home or building systems for centralized control and
automation.
 Flexibility with temporary access permissions and customizable user settings.
However, the new IOT version has some constraints and privacy issues:

 Dependency on internet connectivity, susceptible to network outages.

 Potential security vulnerabilities if not properly secured, especially with remote access
features.
 Compatibility issues with older door hardware or building infrastructure.
 Reliance on battery power for operation, requiring periodic replacement or recharging.
 Concerns about the security and privacy of personal data collected through the lock's
activity logging features.
 Risk of unauthorized access or hacking if the lock's software or firmware is not regularly
updated.

With adjusted inflation, a traditional door lock (good quality) costs around 1,500 PKR and go up
to max 3,500 PKR while IOowrfs111``5xzsd3788pT door locks cost on average 8,000 PKR and go
up to 16,000 PKR. In addition, IOT door locks require professional installation and has higher
maintenance costs due to batteries and power source requirements. All these values are
inflation adjusted.

Part-2: Identify two embedded systems that are sold on the market today and analyze
their interfaces. Describe all inputs to each system and outputs from each system.
Classify the inputs and outputs based on their mode of interaction. For each input and
output, estimate the rate at which data is transferred in any units that seem appropriate.
For example, a video game with a screen might output video data at 24 frames per
second. Estimate the “response time” of the system for different inputs. That is, what is
the time between when the system receives input and the system responds to that
input? For example, a digital camera might take a picture after a button is pressed. The
response time would be the time between pressing the button and taking the picture.
Explain how you made your estimation.
