Assessment task details INSTRUCTIONS

and instructions As a graduate student on a Graduate Scheme with Airbus, you have
been tasked with familiarizing yourself with the Supersonic Flow
over a diamond shape aerofoil via Computational Fluid Dynamics
(CFD). To that purpose, you have been asked to conduct an a CFD
simulation to determine the aerodynamic characteristics of a
diamond shape aerofoil immersed in supersonic flow at a series of
angles of attack and speeds.

Assessment Information/Brief
1
As part of this exercise, you must:
1. Attend, read, understand and acknowledge the CFD
workshop and CFD simulation Instructions.
2. Conduct the simulation using the ANSYS Fluent software
using the geometry and cases provided in the workshop plan
and found here in the Table 1 and 2 below.
3. Collect the simulation results data: pressure distribution map
around the aerofoil, velocity map, density map, pressure
coefficient distribution, lift and drag coefficients.
4. Determine the occurrence of shock waves and expansion
fans on the aerofoil surface.
5. Calculate the lift coefficient, drag coefficient and L/D using
shock-expansion methodology and linearized supersonic
flow theory for the simulation cases.
6. Plot the simulation and analytical lift and drag coefficients
against the angles of attack for the various speeds.
7. Explain if the simulation and analytical data match between
them.
8. Explain if what you have simulated and calculated matches
the expectations for this test.

SUBMISSION
Your submission will consist of answering a series of 10 questions in
a test format.
The Test will be released on Friday, the 8th of December and you
will have until Monday, the 11th of December, 4 pm to complete it.
Assessment Information/Brief
2
You must complete the test in one sitting.
The test duration is 3h from the moment you open it.
You will need the following on hand:
o Objective of the simulation.
o Expectation for the simulation outcomes.
o Simulation data collected and post-processed.
o Calculation of lift and drag coefficients and of L/D
using all the methods required above.
o Plot of lift and drag coefficients vs AoA for the
provided cases, tracing any trends visible.
o Identification of supersonic flow structures
o Discussion of the results as pertaining to points 7 and
8 above.
o Reflection on the simulation process and
observations.
Points are awarded to each question based on the accuracy of the
Assessment Criteria
answer.
The answers can be submitted as attachments to each question.

Referencing

Academic Misconduct is an action which may give you an unfair

advantage in your academic work. This includes plagiarism, asking
someone else to write your assessment for you or taking notes
into an exam. The University takes all forms of academic
