SYMPTOMS VOCABULARY

Instructions: Read the definitions carefully and complete the worksheet with the appropriate word from the box in each space.

1. Water eyes: A condition in which there is an overflow of tears.


2. Shortness of breath: A feeling of difficult or labored breathing that is out of proportion to the patient's level of physical
activity.
3. Headache: A pain located in the head, as over the eyes, at the temples or at the base of the skull.
4. Backache: A pain, especially in the lumbar region of the back, usually caused by the strain of a muscle or ligament.
5. Colic: A severe, often fluctuating pain in the abdomen caused by intestinal gas or obstruction in the intestines and suffered
especially by babies.
6. Stabbing pain: A sudden, sharp, piercing pain usually lasting seconds or less.
7. Fever: An abnormally high body temperature.
8. Runny nose: An American idiom that describes when liquid comes out of your nose because of a cold, allergy, or crying.
9. Sore throat: Any of various inflammations of the tonsils, pharynx, or larynx characterized by pain in swallowing.
10. Dizziness: Having the sensation of things spinning around.
11. Weakness: Lack of strength.
12. Stomachache: Pain in the abdominal region.
13. Blurred vision : Refers to a lack of sharpness of vision resulting in the inability to see fine detail.
14. Cold and flu : Respiratory illnesses that may include symptoms such as fever, body aches, extreme tiredness, and dry cough.
15. Cough : To expel air from the lungs suddenly with a harsh noise.
16. Shivers/chills : To shake slightly and uncontrollably as a result of being cold, frightened, or excited.
17. Swelling: An abnormal enlargement of a part of the body.
18. Indigestion: Pain or discomfort in the stomach associated with difficulty in digesting food.
19. Tingling: Experiencing a slight prickling or stinging sensation.
20. Numbness: When a part of the body is deprived of the power of physical sensation.
21. Sleeplessness: Inability to sleep.
22. Itchiness: An irritating cutaneous sensation that produces desire to scratch.
